Summary: This is based off of a fan account from 2012 in which at Lay’s birthday party with fans Kris apologizes because he didn't get him a gift. The other members state proudly that they all gave Lay their gifts already. So Kris promises Lay that before midnight he will have a gift for him. So here’s what happened -

The EXO van pulled into the dorm around 8 p.m. All the members were still hyper from Lay’s birthday party. Luhan exited the van first followed by Lay who he promoted to climb on his back for a piggy back ride while the other members sang happy birthday over and over until they had all entered the house where Luhan finally set Lay down and they all applauded him one last time.

“Congratulations on becoming one year older Lay hyung,” Chen held his hand up for a high five and brought Lay in with the other arm for a bro hug.

“Lay shiii -“ Xiumin wrapped his arms around Lay’s neck from behind while Luhan wrapped them both up in a bear hug.

“Xing xing I’m soo happy for you!” Tao waited his turn to hug Lay. “Can I borrow some of your new shirts sometimes?” he whispered before he was hissed at and ushered away by Luhan and Xiumin who heard him.

Lay could only laugh, red in the face from all the excitement and emotions. He suddenly noticed someone in the corner who seemed to be in his own little world and was he talking to himself?

Kris wasn't exactly talking to himself, rather trying to rehearse the best way to wish Lay a happy birthday.

“Happy Birthday.” He whispered and held his hand out to an imaginary person before shaking his head and trying again holding his hand up for a high five like Chen had. “Yo, Happy b-day bro.” He said before bowing his head in shame. He suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder that made him jump back.

“Ah! Lay shi.” He pressed up against the wall behind him. Lay was only a couple inches away looking up at him. Way too close. He thought.

“Well?” Lay asked tilting his head.

“Haha…”Kris gave an awkward laugh. “I know I owe you one gift.”

“It’s ok. I know you forgot. How about just wishing me happy birthday?” Lay smiled that dimly smile Kris liked so much.

Kris gulped hard before shaking his head. “No, no. I promised I would have a gift for you and I will. I’m a man of my word.”

He slowly slid sideways freeing himself from between the wall and Lay finally able to breathe.
“Trust me, you’ll love it.” He said before heading to his room.

Kris grabbed some paper and a pencil and began drawing. It had only been 10 minutes before his roommate Chen entered carrying a water bottle gulping it down.

“Wow that really was a fun party. The fans always surprise me with how well they know us.” Chen continued to talk, taking a seat next to Kris on his bed, and staring over his shoulder at what his hyung was doing.

“Hey, what’s that?” Chen tried to pull the paper towards him but Kris hid it away with his arm. “Are you drawing Lay hyung a picture?” He suddenly burst out laughing.

“Wae?” What’s wrong with that?” Kris glared sideways at him.

“People are going to think Lay hyung has a 5 year old son if they see that.” Chen teased.

“Yah, Lay should feel lucky to have a drawing from Picasso Kris.” He patted his chest proudly.

“Wow, you make him wait till midnight then hand him a crappy drawing?” Chen shook his head. “That’s terrible.” He got up making his way out the room.

“What do you know?” Kris threw a pillow at him but Chen had already made it out the door. To say his roommate’s words hadn't affected him would be a lie. He crumpled up the picture he had been working on and started a new one. One after another he continued to rip them up and toss them away until he had a nice pile of rejected gifts sitting beside him. It wasn't until the clock struck 9 that he realized he hadn't drawn anything remotely close to being considered a decent birthday present for Lay. So he decided to give up on that idea.

Kris stood at the stove grinning about how smart he was. “The way to Lay shi’s heart is through his stomach. Sweets are Lay’s favorite. Good thing we had some cookie dough in the fridge.”

The oven timer dinged and Kris opened the stove to see how they had turned out. As soon as the oven door opened a cloud of black smoke made its way out, Kris quickly opened the kitchen window and began fanning the smoke out.

“I must have left them too long.” He coughed. “Dang it.”

Kris wasn't going to give up that easy. He tried again. This time he left them for a much shorter time, but to his dismay they came out still gooey not formed into cookies at all. One more time he thought. There was only a little dough left so he used it to make one big cookie in the shape of a heart. The oven dinged and Kris hesitated to open it. He took a deep breath before taking the cookie out. The second he did his nose was met with the sweet scent of chocolate. He laid the tray on the stove and checked his work. It was nicely browned and the perfect mix of soft and chewy.

“I did it!” He smiled “Yehet!” He imitated Sehun, jumping around a little before settling down and running to get Lay.

“Lay shi!” He called through the halls.

After a few moments the small brunet appeared, dressed down from the stylish clothes he had worn during his birthday party to now a navy blue tank top and grey sweat pants. Kris actually preferred this style for Lay. It was more him.

“What is it?” He asked tilting his head making his collar bones show more visible. Kris tried not to stare.

“Can you uh, meet me in my room in 5 minutes? I have your gift ready.” Kris smiled proudly.

“Really?” Lay asked excitedly. “Ok.” The next second he was out of site.

“Oh and if Chenchen’s there tell him to get the heck out!” Kris shouted after him. He could hear Lay laugh in the hallway. He gave a sigh of relief that he had finally thought of something great for Lay’s present. He walked back to the kitchen feeling pretty good about how things had turned out. A feeling that flushed out of him the second he saw what was waiting in the kitchen.

“Tao?” Kris rushed to the panda that had chocolate all around his mouth. “No, no. You didn't!”

“Kris ge, who made the cookies? They didn't make enough.” Tao said licking his fingers.

“I did.” Kris collapsed on the counter, burying his head in his arms. “I made it for Lay’s birthday present.”

“You made it?” Tao laughed. “No seriously, who?”

Kris shot up, slamming his palm on the counter. “I made it! And you ate it! Now I have nothing to give Lay shi!”

“Oh, sorry ge.” Tao bowed his head looking around awkwardly. “Well if it makes you feel better. It was good!” He smiled giving a thumbs up and running off with Kris lifting his fist threating but unable to do anything but glare after him.

Kris looked at the clock. It was already 11:30, Lay was sitting in his room waiting for his gift. There was nothing he could do about it now. He sighed as he dragged himself up the stairs to his room. He opened the door to a happy unicorn and his stomach churned.

Kris sat next to Lay on his bed “Do I get my present now?” he asked looking around to see if he could spot it in the room.

“Yes…” Kris nodded and smiled awkwardly. “But first you have to close your eyes.”

Lay bit his lower lip looking at Kris curiously but complied and closed his eyes holding out his hands.

Kris stared at Lay for a moment. He really didn't want to let him down. He had to do something. He took a deep breath and put his hands on Lay’s shoulders and he could feel him tense up beneath them. Slowly he leaned in and gently pressed his lips against Lay’s pulling away quickly. Lay’s eye’s opened almost immediately.

Kris sat facing forward now, shifting around nervously. “Happy Birthday” He said looking down at his hands.

Lay stared at him but Kris was focusing on the door in front of him. He could feel his face go red.

“Is that it?” Lay looked puzzled.

“What?” Kris turned towards him.

“You could have done that in front of the other members.” Lay gave a soft chuckle.

“No I couldn't.” Kris was taken aback face still red.

“I've kissed the other member’s more passionately than that on stage and in front of fans.”

“I wasn't trying to kiss you passionately.” Kris had to point out. “I was just…It was supposed to be...”

“It was so quick,” Lay interrupted. “I couldn't even enjoy it.” He put his hand to his lips as if feeling for a left over sensation.

“Enjoy it?” Kris gawped at him. “You should appreciate it.”

“Appreciate it?” Lay mimicked Kris.

“Yes, I wouldn't just kiss anyone!” Kris exclaimed and Lay fell silent. He was gazing at Kris so intently he had to turn away. Kris was upset. Lay didn't understand him at all and Kris felt he should, they had been together long enough. Kris wasn't like the other members he didn't do skinship the way the others did. He couldn't just kiss someone he didn't have feelings for and he hadn't.

“Do it again.” Lay said breaking the silence.

“What?”

“I didn't get to appreciate it last time. Do it again, but longer this time. Please?” Lay smiled hopefully.

“F-for how long?” Kris was looking everywhere but at Lay.

Lay took out his phone. “It’s going to be midnight in 4 minutes. If you kiss me till then I’ll forgive you for forgetting my birthday.” Kris watched him set a timer on his phone.

“Deal?” He smiled at Kris.

Kris nodded and licked his lips. Lay laughed at his attempted to make his lips smoother.

Kris grabbed Lay’s shoulders like he had before but this time Lay didn't tense up. Instead he tilted his head up slightly and was leaning in with his eyes closed softly. Kris leaned in too, closing his eyes tight and pressing his lips against Lays. At first Kris’s lips were pursed together tightly. He could hear Lay holding back laughs, probably at how awkward it felt.

Slowly though he started to notice things that while they made him nervous intrigued him as well. He first noticed Lay’s smell, sweet and inviting. He felt Lay’s hands resting gently on both his thighs. And Lay’s lips, even smushed against Kris’s closed month felt very soft. So much so that Kris decided he wanted a better feel of them and allowed his mouth to open slightly taking in Lays bottom lip which the younger did not protest.

The feeling was so electric Kris couldn't focus on anything but Lay’s mouth and how he wanted to taste them more. He moved his hands from Lays shoulders cupping the brunettes face and began sucking Lays bottom lip more and more before claiming his whole mouth. Lay sighed as he sank deeper into Kris’s mouth breaking away only to breathe for a second before plunging back in for a more passionate kiss. Lay’s arms wrapped around Kris’s neck working their way through his hair while Kris had his hands massaging the curves on Lay’s back. Kris could hear a ringing in his ears but it seems so distant and unimportant he didn't really care what it was. So he ignored it. It wasn't until Lay pulled away that he understood what it was.

“The timer.” Lay gasped.

“Uh huh.” Kris nodded breathlessly staring at Lay’s swollen lips and wondering why they weren’t connected to his.

“We’re supposed to -“ Lay was cut off by Kris devouring his mouth once again and Lay was more than willing to continue.

There was a sudden banging at the door “Yah! When can I sleep in my bed? You guys better not be making out on it!” Chen’s voice cut through the door like glass.

“Come back later!” Kris shot back and Lay laughed into his shoulder.

“Hey it’s my room too! I have rights!” Chen continued banging.

“Chen, you little -“

“It’s alright.” Lay drew Kris’s attention back to him. “I should go before Luhan starts wondering where I am too. Then we’ll have two idiots banging at the door."

“But…” Kris pouted biting his lip still staring at Lay’s.

“Thank’s for the birthday gift.” Lay smiled. “I appreciate it.”

Kris let out a low chuckle. “I'm glad.”

Lay ran his hands through Kris’s hair smiling at him.

Kris stared at Lay fixedly, “ I need to tell you …how I really feel about you.”

“MY GOSH, are you guys even listening to me?” Chen shouted again.

“I’m leaving!” Lay shouted. He turned back to Kris, leaning in for one last kiss. “Tomorrow.” He whispered “Then I can say it back to you.” Kris smiled. Lay understood him better than he thought.

The End. More like the beginning <3
