Isle La Motte 2010

Sep 03, 2010 16:08

Well, this past week's vacation has pretty much been the DEFINITION of "All the best laid plans go awry..." So here's something of an update... One a month lately... But at least they're coming on occasion! ;-)

Anyway, Pat was not able to come with me up to Vermont this year, because he was stuck at work... He has a great new job, so that's excellent, but he only just started the week before we were supposed to go away, so sadly he wasn't able to come. My trip to ILM was up in the air for so long that I wasn't able to give enough notice or planning to invite Aimee & Neall this year, either. SO, it would have been an awfully lonely trip, except that my brother had agreed to come up with Pat and I this year, so it ended up turning into a sibling-week after all was said and done. It was a lovely thing, after all was said and done, but was not the plan as intended!

To add to that complication... My Mom took off the entire week to hang out with us and go to the fair, and have some family time when she confirmed that Pat was not able to come up. Sadly, her plans were cut short when, on Sunday morning, early on Bill's birthday, he got into a fairly severe bike accident. So we all raced down to Burlington, and Mom ended up spending Sunday and Monday at Fletcher Allen Hospital with him, while Matt and I tried to enjoy our vacation while waiting for news. Turns out he ended up with a fractured pelvis, and had to go into surgery to put a plate and a screw in... He was in and out of surgery much faster than we'd anticipated, and he was actually home by Tuesday evening. Matt and I went down to have dinner with them, and celebrate a late birthday for Bill. Thankful that he's ok.

I did get to see Jamien on Monday evening, however, and I got to meet her newborn son Logan Alexander Forrest. He's a cutie if there ever was one! He's keeping her on her toes, and I'm just so glad that they were able to come up to camp at all to visit with us, have some (real) dinner, and enjoy the lovely cool evening air for a while.

We visited with Uncle Howie and Aunt Polly and Aunt Jupe a little bit, and spent the rest of the week in and out of the lake (mostly in), combating temps in the 85-90 degree range for the better part of the week. It really was lovely when we allowed ourselves to sit back and relax for a while. On my last night, my bedroom was surrounded by a skunk who decided it might be fun to try to scratch his way into the cabin through the wall/window behind my head, so I was a LITTLE freaked out... I knew it couldn't get in or anything, but wild animals scratching at your bedroom walls is a little disconcerting. I didn't get much sleep that last night. Heh. There were a million skunks out though... We drove past two on our way home after dinner with Mom and Bill (in addition to a fox, and a bunch of froggies), and one was trying to block our way down East Shore Road... So maybe it was that guy who followed us home and wanted to come in for some blackberry pie or something late on Wednesday night... lol.
(PS. The blackberry pie we bought on South Hero WAS pretty awesome. heh heh)

Anyway, we missed getting to the C.V. Fair after all. I also missed out on seeing everyone else I'd hoped to in the confusion and craziness that was Bill's injury. We also had to try to make sure there was time for us to actually enjoy Pratt Haven for a while before having to head back yesterday afternoon. So though I'd meant to at least try to get in touch with Desrochers and Christina (will send baby-gift when the little one comes along), I'll just have to try to make some time to see people again this winter when we come up for our Holiday visit home. Of course, Adam Hall is also moving back to Vermont, so it would be lovely to see he and Simone and Ed & Ruby as well, so the list grows longer... There's never enough time back home in VT. ;-)

We went the "short" way back over to Rouses Point, NY to catch the Northway and eliminate all the mid-day back road traveling, and it really did cut about an hour+ off of the trip!  Sadly, my phone-GPS decided to stress me out and get us lost for NO REASON on the back roads in Jersey instead as I was trying to make my way back to Secaucus Jct to drop Matt off again. Blergh. Thanks to Jersey for easily eliminating a good vacation's relaxation in one evening of frustration. Heh.

Now it's time for this year's Labor Day LARP... "Lace & Steel III." I'm playing a boy. Should be an interesting one. I don't think anyone has their actual character sheet yet, so we'll be getting all the details at game-start time. Pat hasn't packed yet. I'm mostly packed (need some things from his costume bucket), but he doesn't get home from work til 5:30, and game starts at 7pm (if they manage to start on time). I'm just worried about the trip down the Blue Route. I tend to hit THE WORST TRAFFIC when I'm trying to get down to game after normal work hours. Bleh. I wish they'd let him out an hour early or something, but since they work for SEVERAL different area companies, I imagine they will not be offered holiday weekend bonuses of that kind.

Off to be a "French" Swordsman for the weekend! See you in Nantierre! ;-)
