just returned from Lancaster County. A perfect weekend. One day soaking up the local culture, and another filled with roller coasters at HersheyPark.
Went to the famous "old country store" that has the exhibits of art quilts upstairs; a truly beautiful exhibit. They were still fairly "staid" -- recognizable techniques and designs. There were beautiful bargellos that combined the watercolor technique; I've never seen that done before.
How do the Amish cooexist with all of us? How tedious it must be to live your life with people gawking at you constantly. There were quilts for sale everywhere. I spent a lot of time looking through the large ones at a bright cheey modern shop. Very nice workmanship, and a number of striking original uses of colors, but not for me. All very very traditional; no matter how beautiful the hand quilting. I enjoyed the cultural history museum in downtown lancaster. It all seems a very odd but beautiful life; except for the education. They think that education is something that causes you to "rise above" your neighbors, so ban it after 8th grade. It seems such a denial of the very soul of humans. Curiosity and learning is bred in the souls; it seems so wrong to refuse to use it.
