Around this time last year, I said I was starting a collaborative project with other local writers -
https://www.witchyfiction.com. Aimed at covid-stricken folk, it was designed to bring a spark of 90's hope and light back to the scene. Magic is a bit dark for people stuck in lock down these days, with trauma and backstory and anxiety driven rises to the top. The goal was to do something inherently optomistic, easy to read, with a New Zealand based witch at the centre.
It was not exactly my genre - soft magic has never been my forte. I don't enjoy reading it, and it seems more in the realm of young adult fantasy than I am comfortable with. So, in terms of keeping it young adult, I failed dramatically. Keeping it soft...well, I kind of failed there too. Cosiness and optimism? There, I am pleased with the result. It's as optimistic as I get, anyway. I really enjoyed the themes I was working with.
There were some last minute panic changes, and I haven't tried to read the kindle version yet...I think I need it to sit for a few weeks. I'm really nervous that I missed some edits...
I'm ordering soft copies this week with the gang...going to try and convince them to do some kind of party, if not a launch ^^ Friends get to see the full cover :)
The back turned out really well with the photo of bolton street graveyard.
I'm planning to try and get another Witchy Fiction novella out, not following the same characters. I'm going to try and embrace the YA...we'll see how that goes.
