We had a pretty enjoyable 9 days in Buffalo. We got to see most of Christian's family and also Peter and Nicole (
aquinasprime). Nicole once again made her three-layer cookies that are to die for. Getting to talk to everyone was a lot of fun and I got to play some games that I hadn't played in a long time: spades, chess, Risk, and even Apples to Apples, which I don't like but which was reasonably enjoyable due to the company.
We got some snow while we were there, though the big snowfalls had all melted by the time we arrived. That drive up was pretty awful -- heavy rain and patches of fog so thick I had to slam on the brakes because I couldn't see the road anymore. The ride back home also was bad, with lots of rain. It seems we don't have much luck with the weather on our drives to Buffalo. I also don't seem to have much luck with my health. The last couple winters I've always arrived with a cold or come down with one in short order. This time I came with a slight cold that I had been having through the final stretch of the semester, namely final exams and grading. I thought it would go away, but then in Buffalo I must have caught a new cold on top of that, because I got a sore throat and ears, a stuffy nose and my voice sounded awful. That went for about 4 days because I couldn't stay at home and recover because we had all these family functions. Yesterday I finally started feeling better and I thought I would kick it by today, but there's still some residual symptoms in my throat. However, new surprise: I woke up this morning with awful, awful diarrhea. I would suspect food poisoning, but Christian and I ate exactly the same things yesterday and he's totally fine.
I think I may have just been tired at the end of the semester. There was a lot to get done, including grading all the exams. The deadline for submitting final grades at Fairfield is prior to Christmas, whereas at Smith we could grade casually into the new year. It was a pain getting it all done in time, but now I'm so happy to have it done because I feel like I can do researchy things. That is, if I start feeling better. I don't want to have a crappy birthday tomorrow.
