For the second year in a row, Christian and I went to a holiday party at the family house of his coworker Annie, in a rural/semi-suburban, very wooded town near New Haven. Tsai-Tsai, a visiting scholar from Hong Kong, came with us. It was her first time experiencing an American holiday party and it was kind of nuts, with well over 50 people stuffed into a small space. We stayed until the very end and Christian got to play some piano, which he rarely has the opportunity to do anymore.
One of the guests was a psychic. She proudly announced she would be giving free readings with her tarot cards and Tsai Tsai and I couldn't resist. For my reading, I asked about my future career. For those for whom this matters, my cards were The Empress, The Emperor, The Ace of Swords, The Knight of Wands, and The Devil, in that order. I didn't give her specifics, like that I'm a professor, just that I'm wondering where I'll end up. She said nothing specific in reply, just saying that things will turn out well in 2013, that I know my plan, people will give me advice, but I ultimately know what path is right for me. She interpreted the Devil as a wrench in my plans caused by well-meaning people who will try to get me to follow a different path, but I should stick to my gut. So, as I expected, nothing meaningful was said, just some platitudes, but it's still nice to hear someone tell you to take confidence in your position, because it's true that your own doubts can often cause you to sell yourself short. Now, as for her, if she was trying to win over new customers, she could have been a little more convincing if she weren't (a) roaring drunk, and (b) admitting to every customer that she just started tarot two years ago and does this psychic gig part time.
