So, yesterday I arrived in Madison. I shared a cab with a Project NExT participant and she was one of the two other people who went out to a bar with me for dinner that evening. Food was good, beer was even better.
Today we had the morning free and I spent it sleeping and working on math. In the afternoon our sessions started and they went until 8:30pm. Afterwards, five of us went out to a bar. Again, huge number of beers on tap, including Shiner Bock! I was so happy. I convinced Nessy to order it, but when it got poured, it was way too dark of a color. Another girl with us was from Texas and she had the same opinion. We both tasted it and knew instantly that it wasn't Shiner Bock. The bartender was stupefied but insisted that's what the brewery sent them. Maybe it was some other Shiner beer, but it certainly wasn't their standard bock, which was what was being advertised. So my happiness had gotten dampened.
Overall, I've really enjoyed Madison. The downtown is so full of people walking around, it's reasonably dense, there's tall buildings. There's quality beer, people are laid back and friendly, and I've certainly noticed that everyone is very active. There are so many runners and bicyclists that run by outside my dorm window and I've hardly seen anyone that's overweight. I've really enjoyed the numerous fit young guys that decide to jog shirtless -- this has been quite an unexpected bounty of eye candy.
So far, no cheese curds but I imagine I'll have them soon enough. The dorm is also one of the swankest dorms I've ever stayed in. The room is almost the size of our first apartment in Lyon, which is really far too large for a dorm room (it's 3 times the size of my freshman year dorm at CMU).
