I drove into campus today because I had volunteered to represent the math department at Smith's Women of Distinction event for high school students interested in science. Danielle helped out, as did two postbacs. We bought a whole bunch of chocolate and then showed the prospies how to play
Chomp, a two-player game where people alternate eating chocolate while trying to avoid a "poisoned" chocolate square. The math department paid for the chocolate, but for some reason wouldn't pay for the poison. Realism, people!
We didn't have many students show up at the very beginning, but then we started getting crowds in the latter half of the hour. Maybe people were saving us for dessert? It seemed to have been a success and several students were rather astute.
Since it was such a short event I didn't have any time to wander over to the other tables. Biochem had some sort of thing where they made strawberry-banana smoothies and then extract their DNA. harumph Yes, that showed us up a little, but ours was considerably more low-tech and there's something to be said about challenging students with something so simple.
