apartment update
Things are moving along with the apartment. We got a little scare today when we called to cancel the gas, since they insisted on having a technician come to the apartment to record the values on the gas counter and turn off the gas and they couldn't get one to come until after our lease ended. The rental agency absolutely refused to have someone be in the apartment at the later date for this service. So we called back the gas company and they agreed to just allow us to call back on the final day with the values on the gas counter.
The water company just said straight off that we should call back on our last day in the apartment and give them the values on the counter.
The phone and internet company required us to send in a certified letter including some evidence justifying our move (e.g., a new job contract).
The moving truck we reserved online had to call us the next day to verify that we made the reservation.
All of this had Christian screaming at how backwards the French are: that you can't do anything online or through another remote method unless it's also accompanied by a more personal method. Doing things online is supposed to speed things up and make business more convenient, but instead the French insist on slowing things down. It's one of the things we won't miss, that's for sure.
