Border Laptop searches

Jun 26, 2008 01:03

In an update to a disheartening turn of legal events two months ago, Senators Russ Feingold and Patrick Leahy have now begun pushing against US Customs and Border Protection to not search laptops and other electronic devices of without reasonable suspicion. "Thank you!" and also "Finally!" I'm glad that someone in power has finally spoken up to this new ruling which effectively extended the rights of customs agents to search through as much personal history as you store on your laptop. If that's you're only computer (as is the case with many people), then that's a lot of private data that should not be subjected to public search without reasonable suspicion. Are passengers travelling internationally really expected to buy a second "clean" laptop for travel, or else have to remove potentially private files, browser histories, caches, etc. every time they leave the country? Sorry, but a lot of that information, such as medical records, photos of spouses, personal writings, should not be available to customs agents. I'm very glad that this issue isn't being left settled in its current state. Yay for politicians representing issues that matter to me.
