Twenty-Five.
When they walked into the garden of the Earth, she wept. They were carrying the body of him, of Myster, Great One of the Forest and the last of the Old ones. The new knights of Earth carried him, slowly and carefully. The other Great Ones walked solemnly behind them, eyes glancing downwards.
For they have lost a brother. Earth had lost a son. The knights lost a hero, a friend, a mentor. One knight lost her way, her love, her star. Her eyes no longer shined, no longer held any light.
She never told him.
She never told him she loved him.
But he knew.
Twenty
She had been trying for so long. For so hard, and it had all been for knot. Below lay her home, her sanctuary in ruins. The one place she thought they would never reach, the one place she could hide until she was ready. She wouldn’t get to hide now, now she had to be ready.
As she ran down the mountainside, towards her home, she heard them. The cackle and crinkling of the machines. Of the monsters that were, the things that are no more. She shivered in fear, she crouched down. She ran slowly down the rest of the hill. Ever so slowly.
Once at the bottom she hit the dirt running. Running, running, to the place she hope was left alone. Her home, her sanctuary, the orphanage. She ran, and found it. It still was up in flame, nothing was left. Nothing was alive. She screamed and cried and yelled profanities. That day her heart closed.
It did not close for good.
Fifteen
“Rikku! Where are you!? We were suppose to go back hours ago!” The blonde haired teenager grinned at her short friends. She was up in the trees watching his dart back and forth looking for her and the others.
“Ryan! Rikku! Cassie! Luke! Andrew! Marco! Come one guys! We have to go back!” The little blue haired boy wailed. He was freaking out, where were they?!
Rikku giggled, she knew were a couple of the others were. Ryan was near Simon, so was Cassie, Luke and Marco. She did not know where Andrew was, he tends to disappear all the time, a lone wolf in that sense but he is always there when you need him. Rikku smiled and watched her friends as Simon found Cassie, and then used Cassie to find the rest.
Good thing Cassie didn’t know where she was. Now it was five on two, and she and Andrew were always the prizes in hide and seek. They were the last two to be found, or once everyone gives up they come out of their hiding spots. She sits, grins and waits. No on will look up in the trees, it is the best hiding spot.
She looks at the world around her and never wants to leave. Not that she ever could, no one wanted her. She would forever be an orphan, not that she minded. She loved the forest, and loved her home.
A golden salamander appeared to the right of her. It scared her, she fell out of the tree.
“Found you Rikku!”
Five
She stood at the door. A man with golden blonde hair held her hand. A town is burning beneath them. He has a tail, it sparkles gold in the light. She holds tightly, in her hand a stuffed yellow-orange salamander. She hiccups, and he pulls her up into a hug. His eyes are a soft green, just like hers.
“Do not worry child. Come with me for awhile, we will find you a proper home.” On his shoulder is a tiny gold salamander. She stares at it with empty, yet curious eyes. The older man notices the stare and smiles.
Once far away enough, deep in the forest; he puts her down. He puts down the salamander too. Once the salamander touched the ground, it turns into a boy. A boy who looks like the man with gold hair except his eyes are gold, not green. She is frightened and squeezes the tiny toy in her arms. The young boy frowns.
“why?” He speaks quietly. The older man waves to the young girl.
“Protect her, she will protect you. If you let her.” The boy frowns and turns back into a salamander. She starts to cry. The older man picks her up and sad smile on his face. They continue to walk. She loses track of how far they’ve walked. All she remembers is that time in the forest, and then falling asleep.
In the next moment she walks up in the Forest Town of LittleLeaf, in from of the orphanage.
Zero
They buried him in the ground. Beneath the Great Statues of the Forest. Beside his father, the man that saved her from the horror of her little unnamed town that was destroyed. Myster was the little boy, he was the golden salamander that made her fall out of the tree that one day when they were playing hide n’ go seek, he was there the day LittleLeaf went up in flames. He had been there her whole life.
And he will be forever in her memories. In her heart and in her soul.
Her name is Rikku, God Finder, Lover of the Trees and Wife of the Great Golden Salamander of the Forest Tribe. In her, she holds the key to save the world. Once his body is buried, and the tower burned, does she look up.
There is only one way to go now.
And it’s up.
Tick-tock, click-clock. The monsters are coming. Click-clock, tick-tock. The monsters came. Ring-rang. The monsters all destroyed. Ging-gong. The little girls’ heart.
