Like the Emperor Augustus I would retain the facade of a democracy but have myself elected to various important positions for life. I would have the most advanced mobile in history designed for me, ensuring my election as tribune to the common people. This would also cause me to be worshiped as a god by the savage tribes of the Midlands. My position in this regard would be further enhanced when I named Cheryl Cole as my consort.

I have heard the better control/lower fuel usage arguments. Having driven both a manual and automatic transmission car I will admit that the manual gives you more control over the engine. However this is not really the point of driving, which is to have control over the speed and direction that the car is traveling both of which can be achieved far more smoothly and easily with the steering wheel, break and gas pedal of an automatic.

The argument about fuel economy holds true expect when in built up areas - where you will have to constantly change down to lower gears, or when cruising for long periods of time where any gear change is unnecessary. Since these are mostly what you do in a car then I suspect any difference in fuel consumption will be negligible.
