today was the first day of summer camp. boy, am i pooped. i napped for about 5 minutes while my bus was stuck in traffic on the way home. i danced with the kids, dabbled in chinese yo-yo, ate a crapload of free food, learned steps to a lion dance, and made a keychain, all while gaining the general respect of a group of 14 girls and 5 boys, aged 11-16. contrary to the general trend, i ended up spending most of my time with the boys instead of the girls. which felt pretty cool. and it came pretty easily, which is even cooler. although my "mainlander accent" apparently threw many off their balance, besides the very fact that i was speaking chinese. i suppose it's something i'll have to get used to...to most chinese it seems i don't appear chinese in the slightest, so i get the same response as though i were a giant, pasty, lanky midwestern lumberjack fresh from the pinewood forests with a beaver-skin cap chatting it up with the chinese folk. but after that initial shock everything works great.
i saw this amazing indie movie in IFC tonight titled "Europa, Europa" about a Jewish boy and his attempts to survive in war-ravaged 1930's and 40's Germany and Poland. if you can find it, you MUST watch it. absofuckinglutely mind blowing.
now i gotta collapse so i can wake up in 6 hours for camp. nighty night.
