matchpoint

Matchpoint by Woody Allen was seen by Elise and I today.
I thought it was a thoughtful, intelligent movie, and I enjoyed it immensely.
Elise fought off sleep for two hours.

What I really liked was the premise of it. When a (tennis) ball hits the net and pops up, it really can either fall back to your side or barely inch over the net onto your opponent's side. This luck can cost you or win you the game.
Elaborating, luck is one of the single most important things in life.

I have much to be thankful for unrelated to luck. I worked hard, I got funding for school, I do well...

But then there is my relationship with Elise. I consider it the most important thing in my life. But it is entirely a result of luck. I'm 'lucky' that I hated my job at Blake's Gift Shop and quit to work at Goodwill. I'm lucky that I didn't give up when Elise was cold to me when I tried to make polite conversation. I'm lucky she didn't hear me licking my wounds by saying I thought she was a mean bitter dyke.

I'm lucky that we continually were scheduled together as cashiers, despite our complete lack of ability to conduct civil conversation.

I'm lucky she gave me a chance.

I'm equally lucky that every time she had to decide at some fateful moment whether to tell me to fuck off forever or whether to deal with me, she took the more difficult road.

I hope I always have such luck.
