So my contract here is apparently ending early. Tomorrow. I found out yesterday.
The interesting part is not that they're ending my contract early, despite the fact that I haven't had any performance issues or anything. No, the interesting part is that no one bothered to tell me. My manager has some very strange ideas about contractors, that are his own, and not company policy. Starting with the fact that he won't allow a contractor to be primary on anything, systems or applications. He also has it in his head that if he were to have an issue with a contractor, that he can't talk to us, but must go to our contracting company. But this really takes the cake. He ended my contract, and didn't even tell me.
About 4 weeks ago I was appointed as the administrator for this application. It's kind of a crappy application, and not something I'd choose to do long-term, but it was something to be responsible for and I was actually kind of excited. I was a bit surprised though, since contractors aren't supposed to be primary, according to him. The following day he appointed a full-time employee to "share" the application with me. Uh huh. Great. So yesterday he sends out an email that one of his employees is leaving his group to go work for another manager, and that she will be taking over the role of administrator for this application. O'rly?! Ya Rly! I don't really care, like I said, it's not something I want to be doing long-term. But a simple note letting me (and this other full-time employee) know that we were being replaced would have been nice. Fuckstick.
So I was actually pretty annoyed about that. But oh well. Around noon I get a call from a contracting agent at my contracting company. She tells me she has a position at Boeing that she would like to submit me for, it's with a great manager, because she heard my last experience wasn't a great one. So uh, I have had issues with this position, working for an asshat manager will do that. But I told her that I was still on a project with their company, so I was a bit confused. She does a verbal double-take and says she'll call me back. She calls my normal agent, who calls me, and says that procurement (Boeing accounts payable, more or less) has let them know that my contract here wraps up on friday. Saywha? I was just planning work for saturday with my co-worker.... I try to call my manager, but he doesn't answer. I go talk to my customer lead of the group I support and see if he's heard anything. As far as he knows I'm taking over the work for their group when my co-worker leaves in 3 weeks. They know nothing. I talk to my direct co-worker, he's unaware of it. So I call my technical lead. She says no, it's got to be some kind of mistake, and says she'll call my manager. She calls me back about 10 minutes later and says it's no mistake, that he didn't say why, just that they're "downsizing". Oh, but this is rich, I can call him if I have any questions.
Seriously. I can call him? Why the fuck can't he call me and tell me that he's ending my contract. Was I going to show up on Monday and my badge won't work, and I'm supposed to "get the hint"? Just a second there, Professor. We, uh, we fixed the glitch. So he won't be receiving a paycheck anymore. So it'll just work itself out naturally. He has some strange notions about how to treat people. And it's not like I have done something wrong that I'm aware of, they encouraged my company to submit me for other jobs here. It could have been an amicable parting, why didn't he just say something...
Anyway, not sure what I want to do now. I might take some time off. They've already submitted me for another position with another division. I want to think about it for awhile, but they're rushing me. I figure it can't hurt to send in my resume and at least take an interview, I'll have a few days to think about it anyway. I probably have enough cash on hand to take 6 months off or so if I cut expenses. Or I could take 2 months off and travel. That's what I'd planned to do after this contract, but it was supposed to end in April, and I had just starting saving for that. I just got done paying for Lasik which ran nearly 5 grand. I'm glad to have that done and paid for, but I could have saved a lot more if I'd known I'd be out of work right before the holidays. Oh well, no matter, money isn't the issue. Just a matter of what I want to do. I really didn't plan to travel until summer.
In the meantime, today is all overtime, so I think I'm going to work late. They still want me to handle an install this evening, and since I can do it from home, I don't see why not. The extra cash will come in handy.
