Kris removed the blindfold from his eyes. “You brought me to the spa? I thought this was supposed to be fun day - and I quote - ‘a day I would never forget’?”

“It will be a day you never forget,” Adam laughed maniacally.

Kris turned to Adam who had a grin plastered on his face. “Why do I have the feeling you were largely responsible for this?”

“Well, I’m flattered, Kristopher,” Adam said, brushing something imaginary from his shoulders. “But it was a team effort.” He motioned between Katy and himself. “I’m afraid you eternally promised yourself to quite the little spitfire.”

Adam winked at Katy. She did a little curtsy. Kris rolled his eyes at both of them.

“No.” He doesn’t need to say anything else.

“Come on,” Katy tugged on Kris’s arm. “I promise it’ll be fun.”

As they stepped up to the counter, Adam took the lead, well aware that Kris would either stand there dumbfounded looking at the menu or he would run away altogether if he was allowed to go it alone. “So, this guy, here, needs brow maintenance, a pedicure, a facial, and a ‘togetherness massage’ with his lovely wife,” Adam said pointing to Katy who was ordering for herself just down the counter from them. With a smile he ruffled Kris’s hair like one would a child’s.

“Can I get a name please?” The woman behind the counter barely looked up, her long fingernails clattering over the keys on her keyboard. “And is that a regular facial?”

Kris didn’t answer her, choosing to remain obstinate toward this whole situation. When Adam glared at him, he caved.

“Kristopher Allen,” he sighed. “What other choice is there besides regular?” He was more than a little befuddled by all of this. How many different kinds of facials could there be?

“Cherry or Pumpkin,” she snapped back as if he should know.

“Ooh, pumpkin!” Kris looked to Adam again, bugging out his eyes in an overdone expression of excitement.

“See, I told you you’d like this, Allen.”

Kris shook his head. He loved pumpkin. He was simply making the best of a bad situation.

Once Adam ordered, they all walked back together. Katy smiled and hooked her arm through his, and Kris felt a little better about being here.

“Do they hire extra cranky greeters to make the spa experience seem that much more relaxing?” he whispered to Adam. “I felt like she was gonna snap my neck if I didn’t answer her questions right.”

Adam just laughed. “Yes, Kris. That’s exactly what they do.”

Eyebrow maintenance was painful, just as Kris expected. When the specialist tore the first strip from his face, he had to bite his lip just to keep from yelping in agony. The woman had held up a mirror in front of him when she was finished and he poked at the red places.

“It’s only a temporary irritation,” she assured him. He waggled his brows up and down, admiring her work. He had to admit that it did make him look better, cleaner. He wasn’t quite sure it was worth the pain, but he now had a keen appreciation for all the trouble Katy went through to look as beautiful as she did every day.

The pumpkin facial that followed was not as harsh as it sounded. It actually felt quite good, soothed his aching skin, and smelled amazing. To be honest, he had to resist the urge to lick the stuff off his face.

He was surprised to find that the pedicure was rather comfortable, as well. He relaxed back into the chair and closed his eyes. Adam’s gasp disturbed Kris’s calm moment.

“You have really hairy feet!” Adam looked genuinely surprised.

Kris scrunched up his nose and furrowed his brow. “Hey! No fair. I don’t make fun of your freckles, do I?”

“Of course not! He crossed his arms indignantly. “That’s because my freckles are beautiful, unlike your disgustingly hairy feet.”

Kris knew very well that there was a part of Adam that was self-conscious about his freckles. Whether most of his freckles were covered by makeup depended on who he was with that day. He sighed. “Adam, you were my roommate for four months and my bus mate for another two. You never noticed how hairy my feet are?”

“If I’d known, I would have ordered you a waxing for them, too.” He scoffed.

Kris laughed. Even if they no longer saw each other everyday, being in the same city as Adam was good enough. When they got together, it was as if no time had passed between them at all.

He closed his eyes again, leaning back and inhaling deeply.

“Enjoying yourself, aren’t you?” Adam whispered in his ear. Kris allowed himself to smile slightly. He did not open his eyes. He could feel the smirk on Adam’s face.

“Maybe...but only a little.”

The final treatment of the day was Kris and Katy’s “Togetherness Massage.”

Though it had initially seemed like the most promising event of the day, it actually turned out to be the most awkward one. It was awkward for two reasons.

The first was that there was a very attractive woman rubbing her hands all over his body while Katy was no more than five feet away from him on another table! It seemed wrong. It felt like cheating on his wife, except that she was in the same room, encouraging him to do it! At the very least it was awkward. Awkward, yes, it was definitely awkward. No one besides Katy had touched him this way before. He yelped when the masseuse got too close to the towel, which was the only thing separating him from being completely exposed to everyone in the room.

“Kristopher!” Katy chided. “Shhh!” She relaxed her head back down on her hands.

The second thing was that somehow Adam had ended up in the room with them. As if he wasn’t uncomfortable enough getting a full body massage, he did not need Adam intruding on his supposed couples massage. But, he bit his tongue as he always did, assuming they were in a crunch for space.

“It’s a massage, Kris. You’re supposed to relax and shut up,” Adam reminded him.

He tried to relax. Sure, the massage felt nice, but he couldn’t stop thinking about some other woman rubbing all over him. He closed his eyes and pictured Katy instead of the masseuse doing the work on his back, shoulders, calves and feet.

That brought on a whole new problem that could not be so easily remedied in public.

It was without a doubt, the most uncomfortable sixty minutes of his life.

---

When it was all said and done, and they’d been seated at the restaurant for post spa-day dinner, Katy leaned over and pressed her fingertips lightly onto his arm.

“So honestly, Kristopher. How was it?”

For a moment, he sat in silence, weighing the pros and cons. There had definitely been some cons, but all in all he had enjoyed it. He looked at Katy and smiled.

“I liked it.”

She squeezed his arm, excitedly, pecking him on the cheek.

“I hate to say I told you so,” Adam said, looking up from his menu. “But I told you so.”

“Yeah, yeah. Try not to rub it in too much,” Kris grinned. “Will one of you remind me to see if they have pumpkin pie for dessert? I’ve had a craving for some all afternoon.”
