Kris remembered the first time he saw Adam. In a darkened forest, shedding his leather coat and tipping off his boots, until he stood naked under the light of the full moon. He remembered watching as Adam’s body changed becoming sleeker and dropping to his knees, leaning forward until he was balanced on his paws. Adam had been surrounded by others, all nosing at each other. They had bumped muzzles slightly in greeting as werewolves did, the wolf instinct joined with human familiarity.

Kris, far across the forest, would have been unable to see them at all had he been an ordinary human. But none of them in the forest that night were ordinary and all were were, creatures created in moonlight. And so the first time Kris ever saw Adam, he too was morphing, becoming his other self. The forest was new to Kris and so were his companions but the change was not. He fell to the soft ground, paws catching him. The sound and smells were enticing and then Kris was off, running through his new territory.

**

Memories from the full moon were always a little hazy afterwards, the same sort of feeling Kris got when he had a bit too much to drink, warm and carefree from time spent with friends. So in the morning, when the sun rose and there was a gentle fog in the air, Kris was somewhat surprised when he looked across a small stream. It was quiet, with only the sounds of nature in his ears, his fellow werewolves spent by their joyful run and just beginning to re-familiarize themselves with their human bodies.

As Kris did the same, he looked up and he saw the same man from the night before, the one he had seen right before the change, who had so intrigued him. The man’s dark hair fell into his eyes just then as he stretched his arms and legs wide, completely uninhibited by his own nudity. Kris felt a flush of desire and as the man shook his shaggy hair out of eyes, Kris was startled by the memory of running alongside a dark wolf just as light was beginning to creep into the sky.

Kris remembered the pounding of his paws on the ground echoed by his heart, as he sped just a little bit faster beyond the other wolf, his body thrilled and heart happy. He remembered stopping just before the stream, body turning back to his mate. Waiting for the other, his own breath coming in pants, tongue hanging free and wolf-grin on his face. The dark wolf had followed, padding slowly closer to him and now Kris remembered, he remembered wanting to drop to ground before the other, let him claim him. The other had moved forward towards Kris, his eyes happy and tongue loose and then the sun had shone brightly in the other’s eyes, revealing them to be a bright, human blue. And the wolf in Kris had been startled and he had splashed across the stream and behind a redwood that smelled older than the world itself and the sun had broken above the horizon and then.

Then Kris had been himself again.

Kris knew that man. And he knew that if he stepped forward and through that cold stream once more, that the man would know him too. And Kris could step forward and feel his bare chest where soft fur had been the night before and he could reach up, dart his tongue out and lick into his lips. And the man would welcome him. He would take Kris into his arms and lay him down onto the forest and cover him whole.

Kris stepped forward, intending to show himself and had taken one step when a voice called out loudly, echoing in the quiet forest.

“Adam!” And the man who had been Kris’s running mate last night and the dark wolf of his memories turned towards the sound. Responding to his own name, Kris thought.

Adam. Kris wondered what it would sound like when he first said the name, if it would come out a gasp or a moan or if it would be swallowed whole completely as Adam claimed his mouth.

Another man, several inches shorter than Adam, emerged from the trees. He too was naked and Kris thought he looked familiar, maybe one of the people Adam had been with last night. As Kris watched, he stepped up to Adam and Adam smiled, swept a hand through the man’s blonde hair and kissed him.

Kris backed up, until he was behind the old redwood tree again and his breath was coming harshly, every movement feeling as though they were straining his muscles.

What in the world had Kris been thinking? That out here, his first full moon in California, he would find a companion? A mate? He felt a scornful laugh welling up in his throat at his foolish ideas. His hopes.

One night running together as wolves most definitely did not make them destined to be together. And the fact that Kris remembered the night - remembered Adam - more clearly than he had ever remembered anything else as a wolf meant nothing. In the seven years, almost a hundred full moons, that Kris had been a werewolf he had never let it control his life. He wouldn’t let it start now. Kris’s life would go on and he would likely never meet Adam again. Not that he had truly met Adam at all before. So it didn’t matter.

Even so, Kris took a while to gather himself, curling against the tree for comfort, and let his dreams of feeling Adam’s mouth against his own seep out of him and into it. He would leave them here in the forest.

**

Adam glanced back across the stream as he made his way back to the traces of his human life with his friends and felt a loneliness he couldn’t explain.
