It is a place Kris had often found himself; in his car, in front of Adam’s home. He never knew how he got there, and he never remembered how long he had been out when he woke up. He just turned his car back on, and drove home. It was the only time he slept.
This time, though, it was different. He was going to walk up to that door, and tell Adam how lost he is without him. How he needs Adam by his side. Kris had quit sleeping, eating, shaving… well, quit caring about himself, overall. His friends noticed, but said nothing; he figured they knew what he was going through. They couldn’t help him, so they gave him space. Katy was only around for premieres and important events; they hadn’t slept together in months. Not that he really minded, he hadn’t had sexual feelings for her since he met…. He stopped there. No need to continue that train of thought, it didn’t do him any good, anyway. Adam had moved on, every report of him with a new man chipped away at his heart a little more. There wasn’t much left. Not much to offer.
This time was different, not any more, though. With a sigh, Kris turned the key, and drove home for another sleepless night.

Once again, Kris woke up on Adam’s street. It was bad this time, the clock in his car read 4:30 AM. Kris remembered lying down on the couch at midnight. He lost over 4 hours.
What the fuck am I doing? He thought. How did I end up here, how did I allow myself to become such a shell? I am nothing inside. I am living my dream, and here I am sitting in my car, like some kind of loser. The realization hit him hard, he felt like he had been punched in the stomach, a loser, that is all he was. The tears came, then, sobs racking his body, so hard he couldn’t breathe. He had to quit, he had to stop this path of destruction, and he refused to allow himself to play the victim any longer. The tears were freeing, he wondered when the last time he cried was. Oh, Detroit, his last night with Adam. He cried into Adam’s lap all night. He was terrified of going out on his own; Adam had rubbed his back the whole time and kissed his tear stained cheeks in the morning. Kris had broken open right in front of his best friend.
Before he realized what was happening, he opened his car door and stepped into the night. At some point it had started raining, it felt good too, cleansing somehow. The chill ran over his body and woke his senses. He was alive; totally alive.
Running now, he crossed the street and arrived at the door. He looked possessed, manic even, but he didn’t even care. He brought his hand to the door, again, and again. He hadn’t banked on Adam not being home, but just then a light turned on overhead.
Kris stood at the door, the tears mixing with the rain running down his face.
“Kris, what the fuck….” Adam asked, with eyes sleepy, but not surprised. He looked like he was tired, but had not been actually sleeping. Just then Kris hurled his body at Adam, not caring that he had made a mess of Adam and his house. “I need you.” Kris said, the tears and the chill making his body convulse. “P-p-please let me stay, I need you.”
“God, Kris, I have been waiting. I have watched you in front of my house for weeks, now.”
“You knew I was there? Why didn’t you come for me?” Kris asked, wide eyed.
“I knew you would come when you were ready.” was the only reply.
“I’m ready, now.” Kris bared his soul to Adam at that moment, the look in his eyes saying all of the words he knew he never would be able to. He leaned his body in and pressed his lips to Adam’s. It was simple, just a kiss, lips pressed to lips, but it was everything Kris had been craving. He was home, he was whole. Kris’ body sagged with the weight of exhaustion from the last few months.
Adam picked Kris up and carried him to his room. Kris was too tired to care that Adam was holding him like a baby. Adam gently laid Kris into his bed, and Kris allowed his body to relax.
He finally slept.
