Disclaimer: None of this ever happened. I own nobody but myself. No profit made, no harm intended, etc. etc.
Summary: Kris needs a birthday card for Katy. Adam helps.
Author’s notes: OMG you guys, I wrote fic. I’ve never written fic before in any fandom, but I had an idea for a kradam kiss and I thought I’d try it. So, sorry if this really sucks! Also, I can’t guarantee that I will ever write anything again, but concrit is still much appreciated! Oh, and I didn’t have this betaed, so all mistakes are my own.
Also, it's kinda sad that my fic is the first kiss for this round. C'mon you veteran fic writers! Show me up, it's really not going to be that hard ;)
“What are you doing?” Kris jumps a little at the sound of Adam’s voice. He looks up to see Adam at the front of the hotel gift shop, walking toward where Kris is standing in the back corner.
“Trying to find a birthday card for Katy,” Kris says, his gaze going back to the rack of cards in front of him.
“They have birthday cards here?”
“Not very good ones.” Kris sighs and places the card he was holding back in the store display. It is pink with a smiling cake on the front. Too cute, he thinks. Not what he’s looking for.
“When is her birthday?”
“Tomorrow. She’s meeting us in Sacramento.”
“Tomorrow?” Kris hears the surprise in Adam’s voice. Things have been crazy busy with the tour starting. Kris realizes he probably didn’t even mention Katy’s upcoming birthday to Adam. “That worked out well, we don’t have a show tomorrow. Are you going to do something special?”
“I’m gonna try. We’ll see. We have stuff with the label during the day, right? Hopefully we will be done in time so I can take her out.”
Adam nods. “I don’t think it will take all day. You should have time. Did you get her a present?”
“Yeah, the new Wilco CD and a gift card to a spa in Little Rock. And I told Jack to send a bouquet of roses to her hotel room.”
Adam smirks at him. “Aww, look at you Mr. Romantic,” he says in a teasing voice. “Now you just need a card.”
“I know.” Kris looks again at the display in front of him. Screw it, he thinks. Katy’s not going to care what the card says anyway. He grabs the smiling cake card and heads for the register.
“That’s $2.36.” The clerk scowls when Kris hands him his debit card, glancing pointedly at a sign on the register that reads “Credit card charges over $5 appreciated!”, but he doesn’t say anything. Kris feels a little guilty, but the only cash he has in his wallet is a hundred dollar bill and he doubts the clerk wants to make change for that either. Plus, they are in Vancouver, and Kris definitely doesn’t want a hundred dollars worth of Canadian change. He might think those two-dollar coins are kind of cool looking but that doesn’t mean he wants a handful as souvenirs.
Kris signs the receipt the clerk hands him and walks with Adam back into the hotel lobby. Adam’s bags are already sitting next to one of the lobby’s leather couches, ready to be loaded on the bus to the venue. Realizing his stuff is still all over his hotel room, Kris moves toward the elevators.
“I’m gonna go get packed,” he says over his shoulder to Adam. “Actually, hang on.” Kris stops and walks back to where Adam has sprawled on the couch next to his stuff, tapping away at his iPhone. “Hold on to this for me will you? I don’t want it to get lost in the rest of my crap.” Sitting down next to Adam, Kris sets Katy’s birthday card on the coffee table in front of them.
Adam snorts. “And you think giving it to me is a good idea?”
“Just put it on my bunk for me. The CD I got her is already on the bus.” Kris opens the card and quickly scrawls his name underneath the “Hope your day is as sweet as you are!” greeting on the inside.
He moves to get up again, glancing at the lobby clock. Crap, they are supposed to be ready to go in ten minutes.
“Wait, is that all you’re writing?” Adam looks down at the card still open on the coffee table. “Kris! You didn’t even put ‘XO’.”
“What?” Kris looks back at the card. “I know, it’s a cheesy card. Katy won’t care what it says anyway.”
“No, that’s not what I mean. All you did was sign your name. You didn’t write ‘love’ or ‘hugs and kisses’ or anything!”
Kris rolls his eyes. “The card is cheesy enough already. She knows I love her, she doesn’t need a bunch of Xs and Os like I’m a teenager or something.”
“Kris.” Adam says, exasperated. “Writing ‘XO’ is not juvenile, it’s sweet. Believe me, everyone likes to be appreciated and sending hugs and kisses tells people you appreciate them.” He hands the card back to Kris expectantly.
Kris huffs a little at him, but takes the card and dutifully adds “XOXO” after his signature.
“Better?”
“Yes. I’m sure your wife will thank me.” Adam grins and takes the card back from Kris, slipping it into the envelope still sitting on the coffee table. “We are leaving in five minutes, don’t you have to pack?”
“Crap!” Kris jumps up and jogs toward the elevators. “I’ll be right back,” he calls out, stepping into the elevator. Adam waves vaguely back at him, attention back on the phone in his lap.
Fifteen minutes later Kris’ phone buzzes in his pocket as he steps back into the elevator with his duffel and guitar. Shuffling his guitar to his left hand he hauls out his phone. One new text from Adam.
cmon mr american idol! the bus is gona leave wit out u!
Trying not to drop all his stuff, Kris types out a reply. coming, im in elevatr.
Kris’ phone buzzes again as the elevator doors open into the lobby. ur lucky im kinda famous. i convinced the bus driver it was worth waiting 4 u
Kris laughs and types back, thx 4 lookin out 4 me xoxo ;)
Kris rushes onto the bus and sees Adam look up from his phone, grinning.
“Sorry!” Kris says, slightly out of breath. He grins back at Adam. “I’m here, let’s go.”
