Fic: Blind, Chapter 6

Jul 30, 2009 17:56

“I don’t give a shit,” Kris said, predictably. Kris and Adam had been through all of this before, after the Idol finale and the tour, everyone trying to get a picture of them together, thousands of fans salivating to get a glimpse of them in a compromising situation, waiting for some indication that they were romantically involved. Adam had always been so worried for Kris, but Kris, being Kris, had always blown all of them off. Kris stepped past Adam and stalked down the beach to the gate and walked to the car, with Adam trailing behind him.

“Mornin’, Mr. Allen,” the man in the car said. “You OK? You look kind of upset. Wouldn’t be that the two of you had a little lover’s quarrel, now would it? Your friend over there was crying his pretty little eyes out a minute ago. You fellas holdin’ out on the rest of us? Couldn’t be why that pretty little wife of yours went runnin’ around on you, could it? Because she didn’t have the right equipment, you couldn’t get it up for her?”

Adam jumped in front of Kris and snarled, “Listen, mother fucker, I don’t give a shit who you are and what you write in your little trash papers. Just get the fuck out of here!” Adam was shaking with rage.

“Now, now, now. Wouldn’t your fans be surprised to hear you talk like that?” the man practically drooled as he lifted a small voice recorder out of his shirt pocket.

“Just get in the car, Kris,” Adam said, walking around to the driver’s side and opening it. Kris stared at the photographer as if he were looking right through him. The man raised his camera and caught a couple of shots of the two of them, but Kris still stood, transfixed.

“Kris!” Adam shouted through the window that he had rolled down, “Get in the damn car!”

Kris finally turned from the paparazzo and got in the car. The two men rode in uncomfortable silence on the way back to Kris’ house. Adam pondered the impossible situation they were in, him loving Kris so much, wanting so badly to be with him, but knowing that he couldn’t be Kris’ gay experiment, or the distraction that he used to divert his pain. He didn’t know what Kris was feeling, but he sensed some kind of shift in him. Adam knew he should say something, but he didn’t trust himself. He didn’t want to reveal his feelings to Kris right now, not until he knew the timing was better.

When they got to Kris’ house, the younger man moved to open his door and then thought better of it. He turned and faced Adam.

“Will you come inside for a minute, Adam? I’d like to talk to you,” Kris asked, his tone soft, sweet and hopeful.

Adam was tempted. Maybe if they talked this out, they could make it right. He was so hopeful of that, but he was also a citizen of reality, and he knew that Kris needed time. He was torn between what he wanted to do, needed to do, and what he knew was probably best. Because he relied heavily on his emotions to make many of the decisions he needed to make artistically, he let his emotions decide in this matter, as well.

“Alright, Kris. I’ll come in.” Their eyes found each other and locked, and neither of them moved to exit the car.

“Adam,” Kris said, in a tone that Adam couldn’t place. It sounded like Kris was just relishing the sound of his name, and he wondered what was going on in Kris’ head.
