Title: The Problem With Roommates
Rating: a very mild PG13
Pairing: For right now Kris/Adam, later....
Summary/Warning: This started as a joke, ended up being an epic, each part getting successively longer. I posted this story with a different tone and direction, and a different title awhile ago, so bear with me please, as the boys decided to tell their tale differently than I expected. This is the journey of Kradam from the beginning through after Idol. I have never written fan fic before, so please be gentle. Also the whole thing is written, but lj cuts and copy/paste are not being my friends, so it may take time to retype it all....
Disclaimer: The people are real, some of the situations are real, but for the most part this took place in my heart, and in the hearts of others as well (joey, sissy, lkay, missy)
It wasn't until the producers announced who the roommates were that Adam realized there was a problem. Of course they were going to put the married guy with the gay one: what better way to create tension? But why did it have to be the delicious Kris Allen?
Adam hadn't come to this competition to troll for boys- he could get one just fine on his own. Somehow during Hollywood week, during the tension and drama, the diminutive Arkansan had crept into Adam's thoughts and was stuck there. Was it a case of wanting something he couldn't have? Adam wasn't so sure. That group performance had caught everyone's attention. But it was the man in the brown and yellow argyle sweater that peaked his interest: the flawless skin, the clear vocals, the cute dancing. There was something about Kris.
Of course it wasn't the first time he had had a crush on a straight man, and he knew they usually ended one of two ways: disgust or heartache. The best way to deal with it was one day at a time. That was his motto, it had gotten him past the terrible times in high school, the terrible people he encountered everywhere. Today was just one day, tomorrow could be better, so he lived hi life one day at a time, never letting anything distract him from his goals. Of course the only way to find out exactly how to deal with his attraction was to feel Kris out, discover exactly what kind of person he was.
During Hollywood week they spoke, and Adam realized they were both there for the music, for their passion in it. When they both made it to the top 36 (despite Kris being slated in an unnecessary sing-off) and then grouped together in the semifinals, Adam could barely contain his excitement. Underneath the beautiful exterior lay someone not only with a passion for music, but a genuine person who had layers upon layers to discover. Adam knew that the producers saw Kris as the token hottie, the cannon fodder. He was also happy when those plans were spoiled by a good performance and a little help from the looks department. When the three of them sat for the picture, Adam could feel the electricity run from the other man to himself. It was certain:Kris Allen was distracting as hell. It would pass.
After all, Kris was married, and he was the guy who was friends with everyone. During those first interviews with Kris and Allison, Adam began to feel that he had adopted a mini-family. Allison fell easily into the role of both little sister and mom, depending on her mood. Although Adam had never known anyone like her, she was already a part of him. One look at Kris, and it was the same: he was permanent.Adam also figured that no matter what he thought about one day at a time, there would always be an attraction, a pull.
But now they were room mates. They had already formed a tenuous friendship based on music, and Kris was a super nice guy. He thought about how to get past his problem when they arrived at the mansion. The cameras followed them everywhere at first, so it was hard to talk about anything. When the cameras were finally gone, and Kris started unpacking, Adam moved to the bathroom, to think about the right words to say. If it had been any other guy, Adam wouldn't have said anything: well, maybe Matt or Anoop, possibly Scott... but he had to get it off of his chest, to clear the air. If Kris wanted to switch rooms, that was cool. But then again, if he approached it in that nonchalant Adam Lambert way....
"That is a lot of stuff."
Adam looked up, seeing Kris in the doorway. He laughed, "Well, a boy has gotta do what a boy has gotta do. I'm done in here, so I'll go start in there."
He brushed past Kris, ignoring the flare from the brief touch, the smell, the intoxication. Adam silently shook himself: get a grip! You are making more of this than is necessary. He sat on the bed, looking at his suitcases, waiting only moments for Kris to return. On cue, Kris sat on the edge of the bed, starting to untie his shoes when Adam spoke.
"Kris?"
"Yeah, Adam?"
"There's something I gotta say before this all gets too crazy."
"More than what you said earlier?"
Kris was referring to Adam's casual announcement that he was gay, he wasn't hiding it nor was he exactly screaming it to the world. Kris had merely shrugged his shoulders in a who cares sort of gesture, announcing he was married and he was telling the whole world. Adam could have hugged him right then and there.
"Well, when the producers announced that we were going to be roommmates, I was a little worried..."
"Why is that?"
"Well, it was kind of interesting that the producers assigned me to the one guy I actually thought was attractive. I mean besides being straight and married you are totally my type."
There, it was out. Kris, who had trouble hiding anything on his face, goggled and blushed. Adam could read the embarassment, but the other emotions crossing Kris' face were a mystery.
"Was that too direct?" he asked.
"Um, well, I'm, um, flattered," Kris stammered, "I mean I've neer been told I was attractive by a man before."
Adam laughed. "You obviously don't hang out with the right men. Don't worry, it's nothing. I won't jump you unless you ask."
Kris blushed again, then looked straight at Adam. "I'm not worried. Well, it's certainly a new experience to put on my calendar."
Adam grinned at him. This had gone well. Tomorrow would be better, because he could focus on the music again.
*
Except that he couldn't. Kris Allen was too fucking good to ignore. First the awesome song he picked for Allison. Then, helping everyone rehearse. This was supposed to be a competition and Kris was helping out everyone else. Lastly, he had the privilege of sitting in on Kris' iTunes recording session. It was a signal of trouble ahead: after listening to the harmonic riffs at the end of Remember the Time, who couldn't love Kris allen's voice? Yes it wasn't big, but what he could do with it.... Then watching him dance as he played his guitar, the excited energy, the side singing. The side singing made Adam want to grab him and kiss him along his jawline, tenderly at first, then--
Adam had played it cool all week, discovering Kris was also a great friend. They found themselves talking about the music first, then everything else from books to girls (or boys. They stayed up a lot talking until Kris fell asleep. Watching Kris Allen fall asleep had become on of Adam's favorite past times. It was a little too much sometimes, like he was stalking him, except they were living together. Adam knew that was part of the problem, if he could get away for awhile, he might have a chance at getting over it. It also didn't help that Adam liked to be friends with his boyfriends, and he and Kris were becoming great friends, fueling the crush into something more.
Adam tried to say to himself: It's a case of wanting what you cannot have. You have NEVER obsessed this much over someone. He is married. It was, however, becoming a losing battle. After all when results night came, and Adam felt more nervous for Kris than for himself. Not that he should, Kris had sung wonderfully, Adam had voted for him. knowing he could have him for another week, to stare at that beautiful face---Damn it Adam, he is not for you. Think of him as girl.
Except Kris was not a girl, and Adam knew it was going to be a long competition if he let all these feelings build up. He was going to have to play the part of best friend, the cool one, the uninterested. If he had had another roommate, he could sleep easily. But then again, he had woken up happy all of this week, and the thought of waking up alone made him sad and frightened.
Well, you made it through one week. Just take it one day at a time, and the next thing you know, you'll be in separate rooms, This will fade away, It's gotta be the sharing a room thing. It's the only reason I'm so aware of him, his presence, his smell, the shape of him, lying in his bed.... Stop it!
"You ok Adam?"
Adam turned, looked at Kris, who was lying on his bed, shoes off, staring at the ceiling.
"Oh, just thinking about next week. Country is totally not my thing."
"Me either, but I know of this Bob Dylan song, and Garth Brook did a cover, I saw it on the list. I'm really excited." Kris yawned, bunching a pillow under his head.
"Yeah change it up, do a ballad, that's a great idea.'
"Katy said girls will go crazy over it." Kris was mumbling, half asleep already.
Adam laughed, "Well, I saw this video online, with this middle eastern rock vibe that I really really dig."
"Hmmmmmm, sounds sexy...." and then there was nothing but deep breathing.
Kris Allen just sid sexy and I am about to burst. This week is going to be hell. Especially taken one day at a time. Adam sighed, watching Kris sleep, his thoughts still confused, his heart losing the battle.
Preview part two: It wasn't that Kris doubted his feelings, it was the power and intensity of them that frightened him. How could he feel all of this and not say anything to Adam?
