Last night when Kris had gotten back to the room Adam had already been in bed, asleep. Or, at least, that was what it had looked like. Kris had been able to tell by his roommate’s posture and slightly too hard breathing that he had still been awake. But he decided to pretend like he did not notice and had gone to bed himself, as well.

When he had woken up in the morning the other bed was empty and Adam were nowhere to be found.

“We need to talk.”

Adam looked almost scared when Kris suddenly stepped out in front of him, blocking his way. The corridor was crowded and Kris had been able to catch up with his roommate easily enough without him noticing.

“Can’t it wait? Allison’s waiting for me; I promised we’d have lunch together.”

The smile Adam flashed looked just like any other smile. Only it did not fully reach his eyes. Those blue orbs looked sad and a bit scared, and Kris felt his stomach clench for being the object of that look. But that just made him even more determined to talk to Adam about what had happened last night. Or rather, what had not happened.

“About last night…”

“The stars were beautiful. Thanks for showing me.”

Apparently Adam was not going to make this easy. But Kris could play that game, too. He had been looking for his friend since the morning and he was not going to let him run away again.

“You tried to kiss me.”

Adam quickly looked around them to see if anyone had heard. But luckily enough it seemed Kris’ words had gone unnoticed. Just to be on the safe side though Adam grabbed his roommate’s arm and pulled him into an empty classroom. Once the door was closed he glared at Kris.

“Do you want to get in trouble?”

“You. Tried. To. Kiss. Me.”

Kris kept his voice calm and steady.

The glare quickly died on Adam’s face and he just stared at Kris for a long while before sliding down to the floor, his head in his hands.

“Fuck. I’m so sorry.”

His voice was a bit muffled by his hands but since they were alone in the classroom Kris had no bigger problems hearing him. He sighed and sank down next to Adam.

“It’s okay. I’m not upset over it.”

“Then why…” Adam trailed off; face still hidden in his palms and knees pulled up to his chest.

“You ran away. I wanted to make sure you were okay.” Kris reached out and carefully placed his arm around Adam’s shoulders. “Don’t freak out about it.”

The laugh was harsh and humorless. Finally raising his head to meet Kris’ eyes Adam looked anything but amused. His eyes were red and tears had painted his cheeks with wet eyeliner. Without thinking Kris used his free hand to wipe away the black lines together with a lingering tear.

“Shouldn’t you be the one freaking out here? How come you’re so cool about this?”

Kris smiled softly.

“Because I like you. You mean a lot to me.”

“You’re doing it again.”

Adam pouted and Kris raised his eyebrows in confusion.

“Doing what?”

“Saying stuff like that that make me wanna kiss you.”

The last part Adam muttered under his breath just barely loud enough for Kris to hear.

“I’m sorry.” Kris chuckled. “Seriously, though. You’re my best friend, Adam.”

“I am?”

“Yeah.”

They sat in silence for a while. The sun shining in through the windows on the other side of the classroom, birds flying by outside. Through the wall behind them echoed the clatter of feet and loud voices from the other students passing by in the corridor. Suddenly the bell rang and the noise from the other side of the wall slowly faded until it was completely silent. It seemed no one would be using the classroom the boys were in.

“I think I’m going to skip gym.” Adam said as he shifted a little closer, leaning his head against Kris’ shoulder. “I didn’t bring my clothes, anyway.”

Kris squeezed his arm as he let his own head fall back against the wall with a silent thump and stared up at the roof. Something looking distinctly similar to a gum was stuck up there.

“Yeah. French isn’t exactly my favorite subject, so…”

Another quiet moment passed by before Adam broke the silence yet again.

“So about last night…”

“Hmm?”

“I guess I got caught up in the moment. That’s all.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah.” The sad smile was out of Kris’ field of vision. “It didn’t mean anything.”

“Okay.”

“I’m sorry for avoiding you.”

Kris gave his arm another reassuring squeeze.

“Apology accepted.”
