”Kris. Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise.” Kris winked.

Adam kept throwing nervous glances behind them, down the dark corridor, expecting school security or a teacher to show up at any moment. But the corridor stayed quiet, except for the light echo of their footsteps.

“We’re not supposed to leave our rooms at night.”

Instead of answering Kris pulled Adam through a steel door with a sign on it, written in capital letters.

ROOF - NO STUDENTS ALLOWED

Squeezing Kris’ hand a little harder Adam swallowed as he let himself get led up the narrow staircase to the dormitory’s roof. As they finally reached the outside Adam completely forgot about any doubt he had had about leaving the room at night. Taking a couple of steps forward he stared up at the night sky and the thousands of stars that was shining brightly above them, like tiny fireflies making the darkness seem less dark. He had never seen so many stars before in his life.

“Wow.”

“Pretty cool, huh?”

Kris walked up to stand next to Adam.

“It’s beautiful.” Pulling his gaze away from the stars to look at the boy next to him Adam noticed Kris was smiling. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but why did you show me this?”

Kris shrugged as he lay down on the rough surface of the roof, folding his arms under his head.

“I just thought you’d like it.”

Adam hesitated before sitting down beside the other boy and they then shared a comfortable silence, watching the glimmering night sky. Down by the east side of the building the leaves on an aspen tree rattled in the light breeze and in the distant the sound from a car horn echoed through the silence.

“I never took you for the stargazing type, Allen.”

“There’s a lot of things about me that you don’t know.” Kris grinned as he glanced at Adam. “I used to climb out on the roof through my bedroom window at night. The stars have always had a calming effect on me, like I can forget the rest of the world for a while and just…”

“Breath.” Adam filled in.

“Yeah. Exactly.”

They spent another couple minutes just gazing up at the glittering velvet blanket above them before Adam turned to look down at Kris again.

“Thank you.”

Brown eyes met blue. If he would lean down just a little more or if Kris would lean up they could have shared an Eskimo kiss. Maybe even our lips…, Adam trailed off.

“For what?”

“For this. Sharing it with me.” Adam smiled softly. “It means a lot.”

Kris chuckled as he raised an eyebrow.

“Who else would I share it with? You’re the only one.”

Those perfect lips formed a lopsided grin - which Adam had started to think of as his roommate’s trademark smirk - and it was all completely mesmerizing to Adam, who suddenly found himself unable to control his own body. The last words uttered echoed in his mind. You’re the only one.

“Um… Adam? What are you doing?”

Adam stopped only inches from Kris. It was like time stood still and the whole world held its breath while the boys simply stared at each other. The beating of his own heart was pounding loudly in Adam’s ears. It was the longest seconds in his life before the reality of the situation hit him. Like someone had just poured a bucket of ice-water over him it all became too clear. Adam flinched as he jumped back. The moment he had thought had been there had not been a moment at all. It had all just been in his head. He suddenly felt very sick.

“I’m going back to the room.”

“Adam. Adam, wait. Adam!”

He furiously wiped away the tears that refused to stop while ignoring his friend’s calls as he hurried down the narrow staircase. The steel door slammed shut behind him, not caring about the noise it made and whoever might hear it, as he ran all the way back to the dorm room. How could he have been so stupid?
