Adam turned from the door and walked away. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever see Kristopher again, and that saddened him.

The next day Kris went to work in the field as usual. His mind kept wandering to Adam. He rushed to finish, hoping he would be able to catch the troupe before they left.

Adam helped the others tear down the stage. They carefully packed the scenery and costumes in the wagons. He looked around, hoping to see Kris.

Kris ran to the town square when his work was finished. Everything was gone. He went to the tavern. “How long ago did the travelers leave?” he asked the barkeep. “Some time ago.” The man behind the counter said. “But the tall dark haired singer left this for you.” He produced a rolled up piece of paper with a bright red wax seal on it. Kris quickly broke the seal and unrolled the scroll. The large letters were written in a fancy script. It said simply. “Kristopher, your dreams will always be there, if you choose to follow them. Love always, Adam”

Kris held the paper to his heart and sighed.

Days passed. Kris worked as normal, the activity in the fields keeping his mind from wandering too far. But at night, he pulled the simple message out from under his pillow and held it, wishing he could have gotten to know the dapper man a bit better. Adam’s mind kept wandering back to the poor farm boy he had only known for a couple very short days.

The travel season ended and Adam returned to his home to start preparing for the winter theater performances at the castle. He couldn’t focus on anything except the farm boy he had met a while earlier.

“I forgot something very important a couple towns ago. I'll need a few days to go and retrieve it.” Adam told the prince. No sooner was he granted permission, he was on horseback headed back toward a little no-name town he had once hoped he would forget.

Kristopher was in the field when he heard the ruckus. “Some rich nobleman is looking for you, Kris.” Matt shouted.

“What?” Kris looked up. He saw a man in fine clothing approaching on a horse. His face was hidden in shadows until he was right upon Kris.

“Adam!” he gasped. “What are you doing here?”

“I came for you.” He spoke honestly. “I can’t stop thinking about you.”

Kris started to run to hug him, but stopped, realizing he was sweaty and filthy and Adam was dressed to meet the noble birthright he claimed.

“But I have work to do here.” Kris sighed. “It’s harvest season.”

“Not anymore, if you so choose.” Adam lifted Kris's chin so he could look into his eyes.

“What do you mean by that?” Kris’s eyes glistened.

“I’m giving you a chance to follow your dreams.” Adam smiled. “Come make music with me.”

“But the farm…” Kris looked around.

“I’m willing to pay your Lord more than enough to hire a new hand to take your place, and I’m prepared to offer you a better salary than you make here. Not to mention that you’ll be able to do something you love every day, with people you like, and you’ll get to see the world.”

Kris thought for a moment. “How long do I have to make this decision?”

“Honestly, I need to know as soon as possible. I ran off and left winter rehearsals to come find you.” Adam admitted. “We’d be in really big trouble if I wasn’t the one in charge of everything.”

Kris smiled at him. “I can’t believe you came back just for me.”

“I did.” Adam grinned. “And I hope you’ll ride off into the sunset with me.”

“Can I… Can we… go talk to my Lord?” Kristopher asked.

“Certainly.” Adam agreed.

Kris led Adam to the main house. The Lord was in his study. He agreed to meet with only Adam, mostly because Adam was nobility and he was curious why another noble was in this poor village.

“Wait here, Kris.” Adam directed. “I’ll call you in after we talk a bit.”

“What brings you to my study today, my fine gentleman.” The Lord offered Adam a chair and a drink.

“I wish to discuss a proposition with you.” Adam sat and picked up the glass.

“I like propositions, as long as they involve me making money.” The Lord nodded. “Talk to me.”

“I wish to take one of your farmhands with me. His name is Kristopher.” Adam played it very cool as he sipped his brandy.

“Kristopher, you say? He’s one of my best workers.” The man nodded. “I can understand why you’d want him. But I’d be hesitant to part with him for that very reason.”

“Please bring Kristopher to me.” The Lord commanded. Kris walked in, terrified. Adam nodded at him with a smile.

“You called me, my Lord?” Kris stood in front of the large intimidating desk.

“This man here would like to take you out of my services, take you with him.” The Lord looked at Kris. “If we can come to an agreement, would you want to go with him?”

Kris looked at Adam, still scared, but sure of his answer. “My Lord, you have always treated me fairly, and I thank you for the opportunities you have given me, but yes, I would like to go with him, if you are agreeable.”

“Thank you Kristopher.” The Lord looked at him. “You may leave the room again.” Kris looked at Adam once more as he was led out the door.

“He seems… agreeable. What do you have to offer me in exchange for my best worker?”

“I will give you a month of his wages in gold coin. That should help you find another worker quickly, as well as line your pockets nicely.” Adam tossed his moneybag on the desk.

The Lord picked up the bag and dumped the coins onto his desk. “That appears to be a more than fair offer.” He extended his hand to Adam and they shook in agreement.

“Thank you, fine sir.” Adam stood to leave, downing the rest of his glass. “We will be leaving yet tonight.”

Adam opened the door to find Kris right on the other side. “Gather your things, we’re leaving as soon as you are ready.”

-----

Kris hugged Matt goodbye. “Come back and see us sometime.” Matt shouted as Adam pulled Kris up onto the horse behind him. Kris had his pack and his guitar strapped to his back as he left the rest of the world he knew behind him.

-----

Kris began to strum the strings as Adam took the stage beside him. Their voices meshed perfectly and they both got lost together in the music.

Adam took Kris’s hand in his and together they bowed.

The king stood and applauded.
