In The Night and
In The Night 2 Adam and Kris dated for a while, their relationship growing and blossoming. Kris became a regular fixture at the wolves’ compound. Most of the wolves liked him, and he had been accepted as a welcome member of the pack, despite not actually being a wolf.
Kris had recently moved all of his things from his apartment into Adam’s rooms. He had learned to lock himself in the room the night of the full moon for his own safety. It was eerie for him to hear the howls in the distance, but he had actually learned to recognize Adam’s. He was adjusting to the intricacies and quirks of the pack, and was learning how everything fit together into one big family type unit.
A meeting of the Wolf Council had been called. Adam allowed Kris to sit with him to learn more of the workings of the pack. If he were to stay with Adam permanently, he would become mate to the Alpha, which made him equal, even if he was only human.
The council addressed all current business as usual. “I’ve been told there is new business that needs attended to? Something that I would be informed of today?” Adam asked, noticing the other council members had become more restless.
The Second presented the paper to the Alpha. “You have been formally challenged.” He said. "On the next full moon, which is tonight, you will have to fight to maintain your superiority." A hush fell over the room, then suddenly everyone was murmuring to each other.
Kris stood back and listened to the conversations. Adam fight? What?
"Who challenged me?" Adam demanded "And why? We've been so peaceful here..." He snatched the paper and quickly looked over it. "I should have known." He sighed.
Kris looked on silently as Adam quickly adjourned the meeting and pulled Kris toward their rooms.
Kris looked up as they headed down the great hall. “What was all that about?”
“Danny.” Adam sighed. “He’s challenged me.”
“That young guy?” Kris questioned. “Why does he want to challenge you?”
“He thinks I’m weak.” Adam stopped in the middle of the hall and looked up with sad eyes. “Because I have chosen a human over another wolf.”
Kris’s eyes widened. “I’m sorry.” He didn’t want to cause any problems for Adam. “I can leave if it will help.”
“You haven’t done anything wrong, Kris.” Adam looked into Kris’s eyes. “Besides, you’re worth fighting for.”
“Why do you have to fight?” Kris asked.
“By pack doctrines, it is a legitimate challenge. I have to fight or give up my leadership.” Adam looked down. “If I choose not to fight, or don’t fight fair, I’ll either be tossed from the pack or killed.”
Kris stopped in front of the door to their rooms and turned to Adam. “I can’t let you do this because of me.”
"I have no choice, since the challenge has been formally made. If you wish to watch, I can't stop you, but I would prefer if you didn't" Adam addressed Kris bluntly. “If I lose, Danny will likely come after you.” He looked sad. “He’ll kill you, Kris. You need to be as far away from here as you can be when the fight happens.”
“I’m not going anywhere.” Kris demanded. “I’d rather die than be away from you.” The wolves within earshot looked over, then quickly looked away. No one dared speak to the Alpha like that. Ever. “Either you have balls of steel, a death wish, or extreme faith in me.” Adam sighed. “But I love you for it.” He pushed Kris into the room and shut the door behind them. “I need to rest to be full strength tonight when I change.” Adam said softly. “Will you lie with me?”
Day shifted into evening. Everyone gathered in the courtyard hours before the moon rose, it was a regular carnival atmosphere. Fights occurred often, but it was rare that the Alpha was formally challenged for his rights to the pack.
Kris watched Adam pacing nervously. "He's young, fast, and has no respect for anything." Adam sighed. “A wild one.”
“Are you scared?” Kris asked.
“A little, but this is all part of my nature.” Adam turned to Kris. “I’ll be Ok.”
Adam kissed Kris on the forehead then walked into the courtyard. Kris watched as Danny approached from the other end. Neither had changed yet, but it would happen soon. Kris stood with the friends he had made, and watched as one by one each of them changed into a wolf. He no longer felt threatened by the fierce forms standing around him. The others across the field, however, made him very nervous.
“I can smell your human’s fear a mile away.” Danny taunted Adam.
Adam, in turn, growled at him. “I will let you back out now with no penalty.”
“No way.” Danny growled back as he jumped at Adam, knocking him to the ground.
The wolves rolled and growled, teeth and claws glistening in the moonlight. The crowd gasped as blood stained the grass under the vicious fight. First one, then the other had the upper hand.
No one saw the blade Danny held in his paw and ran through Adam’s chest, not even Adam.
Adam’s wolf body slumped to the ground with a whimper. Kris gasped, but two other wolves held him back. “What happens is what has to happen.” one said. “No!” Kris shouted and pulled himself out of their grip, their claws tearing flesh on his arms as he did so.
Kris ran to Adam’s motionless body and knelt next to him, sobbing. “Adam. I love you.”
Adam’s eyes opened briefly. “Kris.” He whispered, then dropped his head to the ground.
Kris let out a loud shriek that would have matched any wolf’s howl.
Danny, who was running back and forth celebrating his victory in front of his friends, turned and faced Kris. He let out a menacing howl and leapt toward the defenseless human. Suddenly Kris saw a flurry of teeth and claws knock Danny sideways then fall into a heap on the ground.
“Adam!” Kris realized what was happening.
The wolves rolled on the ground for a moment, then all motion stopped. Both wolves were covered with blood. Kris screamed and ran toward Adam. Adam’s jaw was firmly latched around Danny’s neck.
Both wolves were still alive, but barely. “Surrender.” Adam growled, not letting go. “Kill me.” Danny spoke, closed his eyes, then went silent. Adam let go and rolled away, into Kris’s waiting arms. Danny’s wolf friends gathered his body and pulled him away. Kris could see his glazed over eyes were watching him and Adam the whole time.
Adam had been victorious, but at what cost. Kris now knew the wolf's true strength and power, the ability to kill, had seen him use it. He was the monster he kept telling Kris he wasn’t.
The council met after the wolves had some time to visit the healer and return to human form. Danny sulked in the corner as Adam stepped forward. “As the victorious Alpha, I now control your destiny, Danny.” Kris watched anxiously. “Although you rightfully could have killed me in our battle, you chose to attack my mate, a human who has been accepted into our pack. In doing so, you have violated our code of caring for each other and not taking advantage of or attacking the weak within our pack. The punishment for this breach of pack code is death.”
Danny sunk to the floor before Adam. Kris gasped. Several wolves turned away, as they knew what was coming next. Or so they thought.
“Rise, Danny.” Adam commanded. “I am not the monster you are.” He looked to Kris for a moment, then back to Danny. “I will forego your death sentence on one condition. You must leave this pack and our lands and never return. If any of my wolves ever see you again, you will be brought before the council and torn to pieces.”
“You show me mercy after I tried to kill your mate unfairly?” Danny was stunned. “You are a greater Alpha than I could have ever expected to be.” He bowed down before Adam.
Adam turned to the council. “Anyone who chooses to leave with Danny will receive the same sentence.” He turned back to Danny. “You have until nightfall to gather your things and leave forever. Two guards will go with you to be sure you gather only your own things and don’t harm anyone or take anything that’s not yours as you leave.” Danny was led off and the Council adjourned.
Kris followed Adam back to their room. “Am I your mate?” his question caught Adam off guard.
Adam turned to Kris and took his hands. “Do you want to be?”
Kris smiled. “Yes.” He kissed Adam.
Adam let out a loud celebratory howl and Kris laughed beside him.
