Adam stared after Kris’ cab as it left, feeling… horrid. He slumped up against a post by the road, feeling frozen and numb despite the warm air whirling around the pier. He slipped down, little by little, until his head was buried in his knees, hiding from the suddenly harsh light and the thoughts ricocheting around in his head. He’s right to be mad… Brad’s right, I’m an asshole.
He jumped nearly a foot when he felt a hand on his shoulder, and he looked up almost expecting to see Kris. His body slumped again when he saw Brad there, staring at him sympathetically. He flinched and looked away, setting his eyes on the dark waves instead. “Adam.” He felt Brad sit beside him, a skinny arm wrapping around his shoulders. “You told him, right?”
He nodded, and Brad sighed. “Okay, come on, lovely. We gotta get you home.” It took a few tries until Brad finally got Adam up to his feet, and they moved over to Brad’s car slowly, Adam stumbling and dragging his feet the entire way. When he finally tumbled into the seat the wetness burning behind Adam’s lids boiled over, tears splashing onto his jeans and balled-up hands. He felt Brad squeeze his arm before the car started up and they pulled further and further away from the pier.
“You just left him there?” Kris shrugged, then yelped as Katy picked up a pillow to hit him over the head with. “Kris! Did you ever think about how the poor guy felt?”
Well no, I didn’t. Considering he kept the truth from me and lead me on and was a total ass I didn’t see the point. Kris flinched at that. Ooh, harsh.
“Do you really believe that?” Oh, great. He said some of that outloud. “I mean, think about it. How would you have reacted if he did go into that café and say ‘hey, I’m the guy who fought everything you did for the first week we met and, oh, we’ve been trading love letters’?” Okay, she did have a point. He would’ve freaked out.
“But… Adam knew.” He looked up at her. “He knew who I was and he starts getting friendly. I mean… that’s not right, Kate.”
She shrugged. “Maybe he realized how silly the both of you were being before that. You never know-” She picked up the pillow again as a warning, he flinched and she smiled, flicking his bare knee instead. “Until you talk to him.”
He sighed, but nodded. He needed to talk to Adam at least. There was a part of him that was actually… he was happy it was Adam. But there was still that hurt and pissed off part, too. And that one was a lot bigger and louder at the moment. There was quiet in the room for a moment until Katy nudged him. “What’re you going to do when you see him in work tomorrow?” Oh god.
Kris buried his face into the pillow in his arms and groaned. He’d forgotten about work. He wasn’t ready to see Adam again, but he’d have to deal with it. If he’s there… Kris shook his head. “Maybe running off wasn’t such a good idea…”
Katy scoffed and playfully bumped his shoulder. “Ya think?” She smiled goofily, trying to get him to laugh or something, but he just sighed, and she followed after him. “Look, you were mad.” She grabbed his hand, lacing their fingers together. “You had good reason to be, but he also had good reason to keep that from you.” She stood up from the bed, slowly untangling their hands, then ran her fingers through his hair. “Just make sure to talk to him when you can, okay?”
He waited for a few seconds before nodding and she leaned down to press her lips against his forehead before leaving. He huffed, tossing his pillow down and burying his face into it to try and sleep.
Four hours later - three hours from the time he had to open the store - he finally managed to sleep, rest escaping him as his dreams warred on like his emotions.
When he came into the store the next day, Adam was nowhere to be found, and Alli was slumped over her counter pouting. Oh no… please no. He wouldn’t quit… would he? Kris swallowed and moved over to her to find out what was wrong when she handed him a paper. He hesitated for about a minute, each second clicking in his head, before he looked down and read the resignation letter, his stomach falling further with each word.
“I just…” Alli sniffed and rubbed at her eyes. “Why would he do that? I thought he liked it here.” Kris drew an arm around her, putting the letter down on the desk. He needed to talk to Adam…
As Alli curled into him he pulled his phone out, pulling up his email and typing out a message to Adam as fast as he could before sending it off. He flinched as a message popped up that his message was blocked, feeling almost like Adam had slapped him. He sighed, flipping it in his hand for a moment before pulling Alli back. “Do you know where he lives?”
He held his breath as she stared at him, then let it all out as she finally nodded. She tilted her head slightly. “Why?”
Kris sighed. “It’s a bit of a long story.” He shoved his phone into his pocket and grabbed the letter before vaulting over the counter and flipping the sign on the door to closed before looking back at her. “Where?”
It didn’t take too long to get to Adam’s apartment, maybe five minutes walking - or jogging like Kris was. He stopped in front of the building Alli told him, and pressed the call button on Lambert-Bell. He barely stopped from wincing when Adam’s voice called through the speaker. “What?” Judging from the snappish reply this wasn’t going to be too easy.
Kris swallowed and leaned toward the speaker. “Adam?” Silence. “I-it’s me, Kris.” He paused, and there was even more silence. “Let me up?”
He waited, and then finally Adam sighed. “What do you want? I thought you never wanted to see me again.”
The snappy tone was gone at least. Now Adam’s voice was ripping Kris’ heartstrings to shreds. “Adam. I never said that.” He looked around the street, they were already starting to attract and audience. Great, now if he tells me off I’ll have the entire street here to witness. “Look, can we please talk in private?”
There was no reply for a while, and then there was a buzzing sound and Kris practically tackled the door open, going up two steps at a time until he found Adam’s door and knocked once before he was pulled inside.
Adam looked him over as soon as he was in, and Kris noticed - not without feeling another pang of regret for stopping and listening Adam out the other day - the red rimmed eyes and tissues everywhere. Adam crossed his arms and looked down at him with a glare. “So… what do you want?”
Kris sighed, leaning back against the door. “I just wanted to talk.” He looked up for a second before having to look down again, Adam looked like he was trying to burn him with his eyes, and meeting those blue sphere Kris didn’t think he was too far from accomplishing that. “I left without hearing your side of things, so…” He chanced another look up, and relaxed. Adam didn’t look like he was trying to kill him via glare anymore, at least.
At first they didn’t move, just stared at each other for a few moments, before Adam grabbed him by the wrist and pulled him out of the entryway. He took a few seconds to look around, just in case he never gets to after this, then sat across from Adam on the couch.
Adam took a deep breath then grabbed both of his hands. “Don’t run away this time, okay?” There were a few more tugs at his heart by those blue eyes. “Let me explain everything, okay?” Kris nodded and Adam hesitated, then reluctantly pulled back. “Alright.” He let out a breath. “Where do you want to start?”
Hmm… Kris shifted a little in the seat, then smiled as he remembered his talk with Katy the other night. “Why’d you come back?” He looked back up at Adam. “After you left the café you came back, and you were caring and sympathetic and all these things you never were to me before. Why?”
Adam stared at him for a while then smiled a little. “You remember a few nights before? When we met in the bar?” Kris grinned and Adam’s lips curled a little more. “Well… before that I’d spent pretty much the entire day trying to learn how to play something on that stupid thing over there.” He thrust his thumb back toward the guitar leaning up against the wall in the corner, which was… odd. When they were always fighting in the shop he’d see Adam grimacing at all the guitars there. Was he trying to learn that… for me? Kris shook his head. No, that’d be ridiculous…
He looked back as Adam continued. “I felt like an idiot, how everything I did on it was so, well… bad. And it was even worse when I realized who I was going through all that trouble for.” Adam stared over at him, making Kris flush and look away. Adam just chuckled and went on. “I went out, but I was so lost in my thoughts between you and…” Kris felt Adam’s hand brush against his hand and looked back up, and was met with a smile that made his already beaten and bruised heart thump wildly inside his chest. “Well, you know who the other person on my mind was.” Adam’s fingers tapped his palm, and his heart decided that would be the perfect time to stop and faint for a few seconds before returning full force.
Oh. Kris stared for a few moments, then flushed and dropped his head. Oh, that’s why… “What I said there…” He looked back up at Adam. “You didn’t… that’s why you left like that…” He grimaced as Adam nodded. “Sorry.”
Adam shrugged. “Don’t be.” He smiled and barely pressed his lips to Kris’ fingertips before leaning back. “Ended up you were really asking me out all along.” He curled his fingers gently through the hand he was still holding, pressing their palms together carefully. Kris looked up and saw Adam staring down at their joined hands with a hint of a smile. “I heard you, out in the street, and when you saw me there I was going to take off, but… I thought, maybe if I get to know you a little better, it could clear up that jumbled mess my head was at the time, and maybe we could at least stop wanting to kill each other.”
They looked up at each other then, grinning goofily before Adam’s thumb tracing a burning trail on his skin brought his attention back down to their hands. They sat in silence for a few moments before Adam spoke up again. “Then, when I saw you sitting there in the café… well…” He saw Adam’s shoulders shift a little and moved his own fingers over Adam’s skin. “I thought you’d flip if you found out it was me. And, at first, I was freaking out a little, too. But…” Kris glanced up as Adam’s hands squeezed his. “I was… I am glad it’s you.”
He felt his lips curl, and nodded. “I am, too.” Adam glowed, straightening up and beaming. Kris chuckled. “You know, at first when you came in I thought you were just there to taunt me for being stood up.” He shrugged. “And then you were just… amazing. Even though we stood out in the cold soaking wet for so long it was…” He grinned as Adam nodded. I wonder if… Kris shifted a little. Oh, just go for it. His eyes settled on Adam’s lips for a split second before he decided… Yeah.
Adam made a confused - cute - sound as Kris moved up and over him, sitting in Adam’s lap with their hands still tangled together - in a somewhat awkward position now but neither of them seemed to want to let go for the few seconds to fix it - and Kris’ other hand around his neck. He lowered his head just enough for his lips to be right there. “Adam…?”
“Hmm?” Adam moved his other hand around Kris’ waist then breathed out. The rush of air made his lips tingle.
He brushed his thumb against the skin of Adam’s neck, shuddering at the hairs tickling the tip. “I’m sorry I left like that the other day.” His eyelashes fluttered, and this time Adam shivered when they just barely caught on his skin. “Forgive me?”
It was quiet for a total of seven and a half seconds before Adam nodded slightly, then moved his hand up from Kris’ waist to his neck. “And do you forgive me for hiding that from you?”
Kris just smiled and leaned down to bring their mouths together. Adam broke them apart after a few seconds to grin against Kris’ lips before flipping them on the couch and bringing his mouth down on Kris’.
