Ch. 1 Ch. 2 Kris grabbed his guitar and headed out the door just like any other Thursday night. He had a steady gig at a small music club near his place. The walk was peaceful, and setup and soundcheck went as normal.
Kris looked around the crowd from the stage, imagining the lives that each person who came to see him led outside the club. He recognized a few regulars, then, after a few songs, his eyes fell on a dark figure in the corner. His heart skipped a beat as he was greeted with a wink and a smile. Adam! His fingers slipped on the chord he was playing, until he looked away.
Kris ended his first set and instead of his usual beeline to the bar for his free beer, he made his way through the small crowd and over to the table in the corner instead. "What are you doing here?" "Just checking out the local scenery. I heard there was a great singer-slash-guitarist playing tonight and thought I'd pop in to check him out." Kris grinned. "I'm glad you're here." He looked at his watch. "I've got a 15 minute break before my next set. Let me grab a drink and attend to a couple things, and I’ll be right back.” Adam nodded.
Kris nearly ran to the bathroom to straighten himself up. He’d never worried too much about how he looked for his sets before, now he was running wet fingers through his messy mop of hair.
Kris slipped into the chair across from Adam. “So what did you think?” He smiled up, hopefully. “I hated it!” Adam said. Kris’s face sank. “Oh.” Adam reached across the table and rested his hand on Kris’s shoulder, laughing. “No, Kris, I didn’t hate it. Honestly, I loved it!” Kris swatted at him. “Really? You liked it?” Adam smiled. “You’re a good player and singer, and if those were your own songs, you’re a brilliant writer as well.” “Thanks.” Kris said humbly. “I don’t think anyone has really listened to me before.” Adam patted him on the shoulder once more. “Well, get used to it. I plan on being around for a while.” Kris looked up, surprised and pleased. “You’re staying for my other set?” “Of course.” Adam noticed the owner looking at them from behind the bar. “Speaking of which, I think it’s about time for you to hit the stage again.” Kris walked back toward the stage, and thought he heard Adam whisper “I’ll stay for more than that…”
Kris played his heart out, singing most of his songs toward Adam. The smile never left his face through the whole set. As he finished, he thanked all the regulars and the newcomers for listening to him. He looked to Adam, who was beaming from ear to ear. Kris went to him, and was met with open arms. “Great job!” Adam whispered as the smaller man drew into his embrace. “Thanks.” Kris whispered, feeling happier and even more comfortable than he expected. “I’m so glad you came tonight.”
“What’s your plan now?” Adam asked. “Huh?” Kris stepped back to look at him. Adam clarified. “I mean, do you have any other obligations or are you done for the night here?” “All done. Usually head home and crash out now.” Kris looked at him, confused. “I know we didn’t have plans to go out again until Saturday night, but do you trust me?” Adam had a boyish smile on his face, like he was up to something. “With that grin, I’m not sure if I should.” Kris laughed. “But I’m curious. What do you have in mind?” “Let’s go drop your guitar off at your apartment and head out for a little while.” “At this hour?” Kris asked surprisedly. “I know you’re still relatively new around here, but LA never sleeps.” Adam laughed. “You shared your songs with me tonight, now I have something I’d like to share with you.”
“What do I have to lose? Besides some sleep, I mean…” Kris grabbed his guitar. “Car or on foot?” “We’re going to end up doing both, but for now, car.” Adam rattled his keys and the lights flashed to show them where he was parked. Kris followed along, tossing his guitar in the back seat and climbing in next to Adam. “Do we need anything wherever you’re taking us?” Kris asked as he hopped out to run his guitar into the apartment. “Maybe a jacket, if you’re the type who gets chilly, but don’t really need anything.” Adam smiled, knowing he was driving Kris crazy not telling him.
Kris looked out the car window at the night scenery and smiled as Adam began driving along the beach. He pulled off near a long fishing pier, which Kris was surprised to find had several fishermen dotting it in the middle of the night. “This is one of my favorite places to come and clear my head.” Adam told Kris. “I do a lot of my writing here.” Kris realized Adam was sharing something special, this place meant a lot to him. “I like it already.” Kris smiled. “I can tell it’s inspiring and calming.” Adam nodded and offered his hand to Kris. “Let’s walk a little.” Kris gladly took Adam’s hand and walked beside him along the boardwalk until they reached a small wooden bench at the far end of the pier.
Kris turned to look at Adam and was stunned at what he saw. Adam looked beautiful profiled in the moonlight. It was at that very moment Kris knew he was beginning to fall in love with the man next to him.
They sat together arm in arm looking out over the ocean for who knows how long. They shared glances and touches and listened to the waves lap against the wooden pier. It was simple, beautiful, serene, even romantic, and neither man wanted to spoil it with words.
Kris sighed. He didn’t want this night to end, but he knew it had to. “I’ve really enjoyed tonight, but I need to get back soon. I have this awful thing called a day job that I have to be awake and coherent for in a few hours.” Adam sighed. “We’ll have to do this again sometime.” Kris nodded. “I hope so.”
“I’m so glad you came to see me tonight.” Kris stopped on the walkway, then turned and put his arms around Adam’s neck. “I’m growing pretty fond of you, Adam Lambert.” He reached up and pecked Adam on the lips. Adam laughed and pulled Kris closer. “I kind of like you too, Kris Allen. And I know I’d like a little more of that, if you don’t mind.” Kris shook his head and pressed up into Adam again. Adam’s lips parted with a soft sigh, and he moaned lightly as he felt Kris’s tongue begin to explore the opening. Adam returned with his tongue until they were both out of breath. “That was nice.” Adam said softly. “Very.” Kris added.
They walked back to the car, hands entwined. Adam dropped Kris at his apartment. "Are we still on for Saturday night?" Adam grinned. "I'll pick you up..."
