You said move on, Where do I go.
I guess second best, Is all I will know.

I have to at least give the therapy a shot. You have to understand that.

Adam sat in the middle of his bed and scrolled through the two texts that had come to his phone sporadically in the past two hours. It had to be a little after four in the morning and the only light in the apartment was the soft flickering of the muted television. One of Adam’s favorite old, black and white movies had been playing when the first text had made his phone vibrate. His face had been overtaken by a blinding smile until he actually read the content of the text.

Adam? Are you going to answer me?

Even if he could make his shaking hands function long enough to type out an answer, what was he supposed to say? That he did understand and he hoped everything worked out. That no, he couldn’t comprehend why his best friend would kiss him and say he loved him and then run back to his wife. Another silent tear slid its way down Adam’s cheek as he thought back to that night a couple weeks ago. They had lain on the floor, wrapped in each other’s arms, whispering intimate promises and leaving broken kisses all over their faces. How was he supposed to forget something like that after he had been waiting, wanting and fantasizing about it for years? Suddenly the phone vibrated in his hand, making him jump slightly with surprise.

No matter what, you must know that I’m thinking of you and that I will always love you.

Adam hurled the phone across the room and watched as it hit his mirror, shattering everything in a million irreparable pieces, feeling his heart and soul do the same. He had let Kris have everything and now he was left with nothing. Adam slid sideways and curled into a ball under the covers, finally letting the sobs he had been holding in all night rock his body and mind into unconsciousness.
