Yuletide Letter

Dear Yuletide Author,

Hi! Hello, there! I am thrilled that we are matched up on this year's Yuletide and I am sure that you will absolutely write me a great story that I will love. I am quite easy to please, so don't stress! Yuletide should be fun, so relax, write what you think will work for you, and enjoy yourself!

In general, these are things that I enjoy in fic:

* Character-based stories, including character studies. Don't get me wrong, I love plot, too, and long, plotty fic can be awesome. But I really love stories where, at the end of the day, it's about the characters; it's their story, their relationships, and their journeys that matter.

* Banter! I love banter, especially when it is part of sexual tension, but it doesn't have to be. If you know The West Wing think of Josh and Donna, or, well, Castle and Beckett on Castle.

* Friends-turned-lovers. Most of my requests fit this anyway, but if you choose to expand in that direction, know that this is one of my most beloved tropes in all kinds of fiction. (But that doesn't mean that you *have* to write it. :))

* Kid-fic. I know. It's a huge weakness, but I love kid fic. It is absolutely, positively not necessary, but I thought I would put it out there. I am a preschool teacher, so it hits my cute kid spot.

* I like comedy, drama and angst, as long as the angst is resolved at the end of the story (more or less). I like bittersweet fic and tone if it has at least a hopeful resolution. I am not the biggest fan of hurt/comfort, but if it is done well I enjoy it (usually more for emotional pain than physical pain, but that can be at your discretion).

* Any rating is good for me -- I read all along the spectrum. I read Gen stories and pairing stories, from G to NC-17 or explicit. I read slash and het, though I think most of my requests this year fall into the het or gen category. I can take a mid-level of violence, but more like what you can see on prime-time television or in a mainstream movie, and am not a huge fan of it. If it is necessary for the plot or theme, that's okay, but violence for its own sake is not my cup of tea.

* I love AUs, but usually AUs that I like the most are ones that hew closely to canon, with some vital changes. AUs that answer a "what if" questions are my favorites. For example, in Harry Potter, what would happen if Sirius Black never went to Azkaban?

These are things I generally dislike:

* I read porn, but my tastes run pretty vanilla. Please, no non-con of any kind. No non-con, dub-con, rape, etc. No incest, please. I don't enjoy underage unless both parties are underage (like if a teenage Ben and Leslie met, for example).

* Major character death. As a general rule, if I like the characters well enough to want to read about them, I prefer them alive.

More the specific fandoms below:

1. Parks and Recreation. Okay, seriously, I love this show so much that I can't imagine you could write me a story I wouldn't like. I only included Ben and Leslie as characters because they are the only characters I would like to read about in a relationship, but the fact of the matter is that I love everyone on Parks and Rec. The only minor exception to that is Chris, but I can handle Chris in the same kind of doses we get on the show (maybe a wee bit less) -- I just didn't want a whole story about Chris. I love Tom and Jerry and Donna and Ron Swanson and April and Andy; I think Ann is a little boring but that she's a great friend and counterpoint to Leslie. An ensemble piece would work well for me, if that's what floats your boat.

If that's not what floats your boat, that's okay, too! I love Ben and Leslie, separately and together. I would love to read about Ben's backstory, or how Ben and Leslie work it out now that they seem to be back together (or are they?). Prior to Thursday night's episode, I would have -- and did -- want "please get Ben and Leslie back together fic" the very most, and I still do, though it helps that it seems the show is going in that direction. But if you want to write your version of how that happens, go for it.

Honestly, though, there's really nothing you can do here that would disappoint me. Go for it!

2. Madeline L'Engle's O'Keefe Universe. Meg is one of my favorite characters in all of literature, so anything that features her is a dream for me. Really. I love Calvin and the Meg/Calvin relationship in canon both when they are young and when they are older and have their own family. L'Engle once said she would like to write a novel about Meg at age 50, and I would be so excited to see something like that. What is Meg like as a woman with a family? What were her choices like -- why have so many children? Would she ever go back and get a graduate degree herself? We get glimpses of Meg and Calvin through Polly, particularly in House Like a Lotus.

Again, though, I love Meg and this universe so much that I am sure if the story feels right to you, it will feel right to me.

3. Nikki Heat. I am fascinated by the interplay of the fiction within a fiction of Nikki Heat and Castle. Go as meta as you want! Go nuts! But I also like the books themselves, and am happy if you more or less stay within the book canon, too. I like Roach quite a bit, but I don't slash them, which is why I did not list them in the character field. But I would be very, very, very happy with an ensemble piece in this universe, if that is what strikes your fancy.

Truly, have fun! I figure that if you love the fandom enough to offer to write in it, then I will love whatever you write. Write the story that feels right to you, and I will be happy to read it. Thank you!
