And this made me realise just how much of a better Doctor Christopher Eccleson was than David Tennant is(imo) - Tennant is pretty, oui, but I realised reading this that I was picturing Eccleson.
'All he says is, "Can you hand me that wrench?"' haha. Liked that.And that bit about the obscene amount of jam.
'Of all the things in the galaxy to be afraid of, you pick me." ' Oh... *gets teary*

Are the bits in italics quotes from the episode or something, or just..bits in italics?

The bits in italics in the first section are just in italics, because they're supposed to represent thoughts. That is, the parts about the Doctor wondering about eggs and Rose wondering about strawberries are just in italics to represent thought. :)
The other italics bits are all episode quotes -- they usually stand alone between scenes.
