Poets in the oddest places.

Three years ago, I was a Marine Corps captain on the Iraqi/Kuwaiti border, participating in the invasion of Iraq. Awestruck, I heard our howitzers thunder and watched artillery rockets rise into the night sky and streak toward Iraq - their light bathing the desert moonscape like giant arc welders.

Coming home - disillusioned

I don't think a poem about one's experience at war is so odd.

I've got an old book of poetry from WWI lying around here somewhere...

What's strange is that it's not from a poem... It's actually an article by a marine about his disillusionment with the Bush administration and the Iraq war.

The first paragraph is sheer poetry though isn't it?

Yeah. I mean I guess coz you indicated it was a poem I read it in that light, but the symbology was definitely there. Of course I was too lazy to click on the link hehe
