This is easier. My favourite male character from Tamora Pierce’s books is, without question:
Briar Moss.
There is something absolutely fascinating about this character. He has so many different aspects to his personality and such a varied back-story, he really is endlessly interesting, and always fun to write or read about. You can go so many different places with him, because he really has been so many different people. When a character has that many segments of his life, it’s easy to write him in different pieces, and to see how his life and personality has changed and remained the same over time. Structurally, he has been constructed really well by Tamora Pierce and I don’t get tired of writing him.
And my head-canon casting of him is this good-lookin' fellow:
Mmm...Luke Pasqualino....
Reasons why I love Briar Moss. I think, at the heart of him, is this really decent guy, which of course makes him easy to like. He understands what it is like to be the powerless or ignored group in society, and when he gets influence and wealth and power he always remembers that everyone else is a person. He treats all women with respect; even when he is promiscuous in Will of the Empress there is nothing misogynistic about his behaviour.
Then there is all this lovely hidden depth. One of my favourite passages in any of the books is in Street Magic when Briar is going to find Evvy, who has been kidnapped. He not only storms her manor single-handed, he absolutely destroys it. His magic and his own fighting skills are deadly when he decides to use them, and I always like a character who hides a bit of darkness behind a really honestly friendly demeanor... seriously, that is all my favourite male characters...
There may be something wrong with me.
Briar also has green magic, and for someone who is fascinated with planting and growing and harvesting, this is a big draw. I spend every April-October out in my gardens, so reading about someone who loves it just as much as I do - and who has magic with it - is something that is endlessly delightful.
