But right now, Heechul's reached his limit and wants nothing more than to go home, sit down with his family and eat dinner. Jay understands this, but while it's possible for Heechul to maybe sneak out another night and catch a train home, Jay can't just catch a flight and hope that by the time he makes the twenty-two hour round trip, no one will miss him.
By instinct, almost, Jay brushes his hand over Heechul's hair. When Heechul's jaw unclenches and his hands slacken enough to turn into a small side street and pulls over, Jay reaches over and gives Heechul a solid hug.
"You matter, no matter what. Even if you don't make it, even if we don't make it, you're your own person, Heechul. You are a good person and a great friend, and I value you as both."
Jay knows what Heechul hears from all the other trainees in the company; "you'll definitely make it;" "you have the skill to go far;" "the confidence, charisma, everything, means you'll definitely debut." But he also knows that Heechul doesn't care for lies or baseless confidence; he just wants honesty from a good friend. If Heechul needs to hear that it won't matter if he doesn't make it -- and Heechul admits that that's far more likely than a claim to fame -- then Jay will be the one to tell him.
"Good," Heechul says, snorting. "Because I'm never going to let you forget me."
They let go and Jay smiles, the one that gives him crow's feet and makes him look ten years older.
"I wouldn't dream of it."
