It’s a curious culmination of events that results in Lu Han and Jongin in a car, alone, with a three hour drive ahead of them from Tianjin to Beijing. The original plan wasn’t all that different, except for one crucial point: Jongin wasn’t supposed to be Jongin at all, but instead, Yixing.

But Yixing, that traitor, had managed to book a flight to Changsha and then neglected to inform anyone about it until yesterday afternoon, let alone Lu Han. As though Lu Han hadn’t needed to wheedle and sweet-talk his way into getting permission for a three-hour “road trip.”

“I’m still making the drive,” he declared stubbornly after dinner. “Alone.”

“You know you’re not allowed to do that,” Yongmin informed him wearily, “so you’ll have to take someone with you.”

“But everyone already has flights booked, and it’s not even possible to cancel them anymore,” Lu Han protested.

“It’s better than letting you make the trip alone,” Yongmin said, and then everything happened so quickly that Lu Han still doesn’t have it straight as to how he ended up with Jongin in his car. Only that he did, and now it’s time to leave, and Jongin is still half-asleep.

“Why is this happening,” Lu Han asks Kris, who is helping dump Jongin into the front passenger seat.

“You like Jongin,” Kris replies. “What’s the big deal?”

“I do,” Lu Han confirms. “But…” It’s always a little tense with Jongin, like maybe they can’t figure out exactly how much they like each other, or why they like each other, or even if they hate each other a little bit (probably).

Kris shoves him toward the driver side door. “Drive safe. Don’t kill Jongin.”

They don’t talk much for the first hour. Lu Han plays an old TVXQ CD that he fished out of his suitcase and they sing along at parts, stumbling over the harmonies and going soft on the high notes. Otherwise, Jongin looks out the window a lot; Lu Han’s pretty sure he’s asleep at least half of that time.

During the second hour, Jongin offers to drive a total of four times. “You can’t,” Lu Han tells him, exasperated. “You’ll run us off the road. Or hit some unfortunate old lady.” Jongin decides to power-eat his way through three bags of snacks while narrating the view outside his window for Lu Han to hear. “You’re crazy,” Lu Han tells Jongin, but he’s feeling much better than he did at the start of the trip.

They make two pit stops in the third hour, the first because Jongin may have ruined his appetite with snacks, but Lu Han is starving. Lu Han pays for two bowls of noodles at a roadside stand and eats a bowl and a half by himself before buying them both ice cream bars to eat in the car. (Neither of them makes a mess, surprisingly.) The second pit stop is at a gaudy souvenir shop, where they pick out awful joke gifts for the members. Jongin, though regularly stingy, is surprisingly willing to shell out on ugly presents no one will ever use.

From the souvenir shop, it’s only another 20 minutes before they reach Beijing. Jongin naps for 15 minutes until Lu Han rouses him, instructing him to get ready to finally experience Beijing with a native. Jongin has been in Beijing a few times now, but has never really had time to take the time to explore.

“You're going to take me around?” Jongin asks, slightly surprised.

“What else did you follow me home for? I know you want the real Beijinger tour.” Lu Han grins. “And please, they'd kill me if they found out I abandoned you to your own devices here.”

Jongin grins back and gets ready for the tour of his life.
