Sandara's apartment building isn't a far walk. Chanyeol finds himself standing at her door before he's really ready to be there. He looks down at his hands.
A single red rose, freshly cut. Its petals are halfway to blooming and its stem smells like.. flowers. Chanyeol wrinkles his nose. He's never known much about flowers other than the fact that most girls like to receive them.
Sandara, in particular, used to collect all her Valentines in a pretty little glass vase and leave them on her pretty little windowsill until the very last rose started to shrivel. Then they all went into the garbage, along with her admirers' fragile hearts. She was never cruel-not even in high school when she easily could have been and still have had guys battling for her hand at prom-just practical like that. Ten year-old Chanyeol had managed to find that wonderful even as he watched his carefully-selected daisies die a slow death in her bedroom, for the second year in a row.
It's been a long time since then, long enough to convince Sanghyun that he is truly over his unembarrassing childhood crush, but not quite long enough to convince himself.
Chanyeol pricks himself on the rose's supposedly thornless stem as he twists it between his fingers, anxious. This is new, the anxiousness. He'd never been anxious before, back when he'd presented his best friend's beautiful high-school sister with that handful of daisies and his very best puppy eyes.
A drop of blood from his pricked finger stains one of the flower's inner folds, invisible red on red. Chanyeol frowns, exhales, stops stalling. He rings the doorbell.
Nothing.
Chanyeol worries his bottom lip as the seconds tick by. He decides to try the doorbell once more, caught between relief and misery and self-deprecation. Of course Sandara's not home on Valentine's Day, he reasons. She probably has a Valentine. If she were home, she would definitely answer the door. Chanyeol's her little brother's longtime best friend. It could be just like old times, baby Chanyeol proposing a lavish dinner date and everyone sharing a good laugh about it later on. Right?
Maybe not. They both know the answer to his proposal. Sandara's never been cruel, just practical. She has no reason to humor him anymore; he's no longer a cute little kid pining after his ~older lady~. Chanyeol's all grown up now. He should know how to handle rejection. He does know how to handle rejection.
He sets down the rose in front of the door and pretends not to hear her quietly retreating footsteps on the other side.
i get the feeling this prompt was meant for canon verse, but..happy valentine's day anyway?♥
