Jay meta Part I anonymous January 31 2010, 06:05:08 UTC
Note: This is kind of unbalanced but it's taking me SO LONG to think about everything and it's not very good and idk what I'm saying, I've been working on this for three hours OTL

Despite the gangsta, homophobic, tough guy image Jay has earned because of his MySpace, he doesn't actually act that way in real life. He seems to want people to think that he's a cool guy, but Jay can also be insecure and hard on himself. I can easily imagine that Jay, like many Seattleites, is especially prone to homesickness. According to a high school teacher account, when he first came to Korea it was hard for him to make friends and he would often work out by himself during lunchtimes. (A note on body building-it's not a matter of an inferior complex that Jay body builds; bboys need a lot of upper body strength to do what they do.) I think that Jay might have acted distant at first because he didn't understand the language or culture, but he was more open to accepting Korean culture than people often give him credit for. He's even expressed that he would even like to live in Korea for a year as a normal kid.

I think that Jay probably grew up with a close-knit group of friends, especially his best friend Yoon and his bboy group, AOM. The thing is, he and Yoon seem to be different people; Yoon was on a track to university while Jay wasn't sure what to do with himself and considered going on to the local community college. But despite these differences, Jay and Yoon bonded over their love for rap and hip hop, which goes to show that Jay's open to a variety of people, regardless of race or gender, as long as they share the same passions. So I don't think he's the judgmental type.

Jay is also very close to his family, friends, and bboy group which he considers to be like family. You can see from trainee pics that he would rep AOM by making hand signs, he gives shout outs to his crew in his Thanks To, and on his MySpace blogs, even though he doesn't try to show it, complaining that his friends probably forgot about him, he shows that he does often think of his old friends in Seattle. Jay always says that he dances for his family and friends; he's said that "dance is a way I can express myself". The entertainment industry is something more of a job than accomplishing his dreams to be famous, rich, whatever. He's selfless in the sense that he wants to accomplish this to make his mom proud and to be able to buy her nice things.

With 2PM, Jay is the leader given the unfortunate responsibility of controlling six energetic, rambunctious boys. Jay isn't a natural leader; he's more likely to treat the boys equally which contributes to their band dynamic of the younger boys never listening to Jay, even though he yells at them all the time. Between Jay and Junsu, they have a mutual respect for each other since they've known each other the longest. Among Jay and Nichkhun and Taec, they do have a particular bond because they do speak English and have similar experiences from America; with Jay and Taec, they get along really well in their antics, but sometimes I feel that while they get along really well in their antics, they're prone to miscommunication because Jay isn't very... clear or articulate (he sometimes says things without context), and Taek is the type to assume things and think things his way. Anyway, I think Wooyoung and Junho really look up to Jay, and I can see them trying to emulate his ~style~ and Chansung likes to play with Jay, and he lets him get away with some things sometimes. In the practice room, Jay is serious: he is extremely focused and encourages the boys to work harder, but he never pushes the boys beyond what they can do. If one of the boys can't do something, Jay will take over that part for him. It seems to me that Jay works the hardest out of the group; even though Khun may have had more schedules, everyone agrees that Jay is always working out or practicing.

Jay certainly isn't shy about showing off his body-even show-offy on camera-but he also knows when to be appropriate (although he sometimes trips up over his words and blurts out something slightly inappropriate anyway. Jay is terrible at speaking at a camera impromptu. He messes up his grammar, is unsure what to say, and makes awkward pauses.) He has an American sense of humor... I'm not sure how to describe it, but somehow, his mannerisms and the little things he says stands out to me as amusing, random, and a bit sarcastic.

Jay's discomfort with skinship, I think, is partly because of his American culture and his own personality. He doesn't like stylist noonas touching his hair, and during a charity hugging event (something like that) Chansung took over for Jay and another member; in particular, Jay doesn't like hugging girls because they'll touch his chest, haha.

If I were to give Jay a Myer-Briggs type, he'd be ~ESFP.
