"Hey hyung, do you ever think some days that..."
"That?"
Jinki sat up and made his way to Taemin's bed, where the latter was wide awake and leaning against the wall, the pale light from his ipod casting a ghostly glow across his face. Kibum was asleep, having turned in early feeling unwell, and Jinki didn't want to wake him, talking across the room. Taemin glanced at him when Jinki sat down on the edge of the bed, but otherwise didn't look away from his playlist.
He shrugged. "I dunno. I guess sometimes I wonder if this is what I want."
"That doesn't sound like you, Taemin-ah," Jinki said with a laugh. He toyed with the edge of the bedspread for a moment before turning to look at Taemin. A surreptitious flicker of his eyes upwards, before they went back to the screen. Jinki smiled. "You're not alone, but..."
"But?"
"But very few people get what they want, you know. You're old enough to realise that now, Taemin, aren't you?"
Taemin laughed, finally letting the ipod fall onto the mattress. "I was never too young," he said. "I just wanted to dance."
"And now?" Jinki prompted.
Taemin shrugged, his shoulders jerking in a sharp movement as he toppled sideways onto the covers. "And now I guess I want more," he said.
Jinki nodded, before standing up. "We always want more," he said. "It's when you want less that it's giving up."
"What about you, hyung?"
Jinki shrugged, swinging back onto his own bed. A smile slipped in at the corners when he told Taemin good night. It wasn't until silence had settled in well and firmly again that he whispered "I'm never giving up."
In the dark, Taemin smiled back, but wondered if he hadn't given up anyway.
