Younha used to write songs about everything.
She keeps a diary filled with her thoughts, from the way she was feeling the moment she wakes up, to whatever the last thing is on her mind before she goes to bed at night. She'd flip through the pages whenever she needs the inspiration, and she'd easily find it, and then she'd sit in front of the piano her parents had bought for her when she was a little girl, and she'd make music.
She would sing under her breath while her fingers fly over the black and white keys, only pausing every now and then to take down notes on the arrangement of the melodies and the beats.
And then she meets Hongki.
They're at a little cafe just five minutes away from the university where they're both music majors, and he has a big smile on his face the first time she is introduced to him by mutual friend they have. Hongki is two years younger than her, and there is something cheeky about his grin, and the way he calls her noona instead of sunbaenim, but Younha lets it slide because she knows he means no harm, and if she was going to be honest, there was just something about his entire countenance that amused her.
She finds out before long that Hongki is loud, and confident, and he's the life of the party no matter where he is. He's cute, Younha decides, and honestly not always that funny, but they've already become good friends without her even noticing.
When Younha gets her hair cut short into a cute, androgynous pixie cut, he teases her, and starts calling her his "little brother" until one day she finally reaches the extent of her patience and she finally snaps at him. He at least has the gall to look embarrassed, and a little guilty, and sheepish as he apologises.
"Sorry," he says, scratching the back of his head.
On the day that Hongki first kisses her, he's wearing a bold smirk on his face as he slowly leans in on her. "Yeah, so, there's definitely no way I'd do this if I really thought of you a little brother," he whispers right before his lips touches hers.
She starts writing about her thoughts less and less after that day, and it's not because she has her head filled with Hongki, and just Hongki alone. She actually has a lot of thoughts, and ideas, but she starts wanting to just live life, and enjoy it; experience her ideas without having to think of documenting it. She stops composing music, because she can only hear one song now. She doesn't feel the need to sit down and write the notes, because she feels like there's no way she can forget the sound. She's a little embarrassed by herself, but she starts feeling happy, and giggly, and just giddy all the time.
They have a good year together, until one day she starts feeling different- she starts feeling like the old her. She sits down again in front of her piano, dusty after a year of not being used. She starts playing again, and she notices that her hands seem so tiny over the ivory, but it all still feels natural anyway.
"I'm sorry," is how Hongki breaks up with her. "You know it's just time, right?"
All Younha can do is numbly nod, and whisper, "Yes, I know."
"I'll see you around, noona," Hongki says. He has that same cheeky grin on his face that he wore when they first met, and it kind of makes her smile.
"I'll see you around," she says.
When she gets home that night, she cries, and cries, and cries, but when she wakes up the next day, she takes out her notebook, and she starts writing. She knows she has a lot of songs to write again.
