infinite, woohyun/myungsoo, prompt 4 anonymous June 27 2011, 04:23:27 UTC
Myungsoo and his new roommate don't know each other very well. If Woohyun starts singing in the middle of the night, Myungsoo huddles under the covers and listens, letting the sound carry him to the land of dreams. Before he leaves in the morning and when he comes back in the evening, there's food waiting, covered and still warm. Myungsoo pays for the cable. Woohyun pays for the internet. They're rarely together for more than a few hours, since Myungsoo goes to school and Woohyun routinely disappears to do whatever it is he does.

On a rare evening when they're together, Woohyun cleans up the mess of papers Myungsoo scattered while working on an assignment, and curiosity prompts Myungsoo to speak.

"What exactly do you do?" he asks, gaze following Woohyun around the room.

"What do I do?" Woohyun smiles. "I work."

It isn't in Myungsoo's nature to pry into the business of others, but something about his eternally smiling roommate makes him act strangely. "I guessed that much. But where do you work? You look like you're my age, why don't you go to school?"

Woohyun laughs, showing all his teeth. "School isn't for me. It never really has been."

"What do you mean?" He feels pushy, asking so many questions. To be precise, he feels like Sungyeol. This is probably a sign that they spend too much time together outside of their classes.

"I was never a good student." There's still a smile on Woohyun's face but it doesn't quite reach his eyes now. "It's not something I dwell on. After I finished high school, I started fresh. What happened before, it doesn't matter." He pauses, taps the papers on the table, then neatly sets the pile next to Myungsoo's books. "You asked me why I don't go to school. Well, why do you do it?"

It almost sounds like a challenge. "My parents have always wanted me to..:"

"Always?"

"Even when I was little." Myungsoo nods. "Parental expectations. Didn't you ever get pressured?"

Woohyun shrugs. "Does it matter? I started over, remember? I just said so. You're not a very good listener." Now he's really amused, the hardness gone from his eyes. "You know, Myungsoo, there's no reason to do what other people want you to now. You're an adult, you should do what you want to."

"Doing what you want to doesn't pay the bills," Myungsoo retorts. He's hoping to get under Woohyun's skin again. He's had a glimpse of someone not-so-carefree or happy-go-lucky and he wants another. He feels like there are more layers to Woohyun than he'd first believed and wants to peel them away, get to the core of who Woohyun is.

Woohyun places a hand on Myungsoo's laptop and pushes it shut, ignoring the protests because I didn't save yet, you idiot, this counts for sixty percent of my grade, and pats it almost affectionately. "Clearly it does, since we have internet access and I pay my half of the rent every month."

Myungsoo glowers. In his attempt to pry into Woohyun's thoughts, he's possibly lost all of his progress on his assignment. "Well that's just for now, isn't it?" He shoves Woohyun's hand away and opens the laptop again, getting to work on checking his assignment.

"Maybe." Woohyun doesn't look bothered, letting his hand fall to his side. "I suppose I'm just trying to say that you can't make generalisations about what's possible without schooling!" He smiles, scratching his head. "Ah, really... I'm sorry about your assignment."

Myungsoo sighs, in a mixture of exasperation and relief. "I retrieved it."

"Good, good!" Woohyun nods, even though Myungsoo isn't looking, and rocks back on his feet. "But..."

Something about the tone of his voice makes Myungsoo look up. "Yes?"

"You're free to change the course of your life anytime. You can start over like I did. You can move somewhere far away and forget you ever had to do all this...stuff." Woohyun makes a vague gesture to the books and papers surrounding Myungsoo. "So relax." He smiles, wide and genuine. "I mean, you're gonna go bald from stress the way you act! You're like an old man!"

The most Myungsoo can bring himself to do is to chuck a pen at Woohyun before burying himself in his work again.

this needs some continuation in which woohyun makes myungsoo stop stressing and change his life course. and then they end up without cable or sth and myungsoo's like ":| i told you." lmao. or you know, it could go in a happy ending route too. either way, a continuation is in need!

To be precise, he feels like Sungyeol. This is probably a sign that they spend too much time together outside of their classes. lmao i love this. (and the whole thing in general, ofc!)
