Dixie Flatline - Just Be Friends "Yesterday, a tranquil night made me realize It'd be useless to pick up fallen petals Because they'd never bloom again. It's tiny, but already dead in my palms. Our time stopped long ago."
It's not really Taemin's right to demand Minho's attention all of the time. That's the first thing he tells himself the night after that first kiss, when his lips are still tingling but Minho's halfway across the room chatting on the phone with a hyung.
The easy touches had been there even before they debuted, and would still be there long after he assured himself. There wasn't any need to push and to prod for more than he could chew and more than Minho could give, not when just a hand on the small of his back and a gentle smile could make him feel so happy.
But everything changes, slowly but surely. The kisses are as sweet as ever, and the touches are too. Minho still looks at him with tender eyes even when others are watching, and he hugs him tight when they aren't. But the ache in Taemin's chest grows and grows, screaming "More! More!" and the louder it echoes in his head, the more he tries to shove it down and hide it away where Minho will never find it.
Minho changes too, much more obvious than Taemin has. He smiles more often, open-mouthed and toothy. He laughs more too, joking around and acting his age for once. He gives more than stoic silences and soft smiles nowadays, but for some reason none of that really satisfies Taemin because he's giving more to everyone else too.
But it's not really Taemin's right to try to claim Minho's attention and affections solely for himself. That's what he tells himself a year after that first kiss, when Taemin finds himself alone in front of the television watching Minho's smiling face and ridiculous actions for the fifth night that week.
The aching in his chest isn't just dissatisfaction and childishness and greed any longer, but now a mixture of other things -- jealousy, loneliness, nostalgia most of all.
Taemin has changed and Minho has changed and what they had between them has too. But even if the kisses become rarer, the easy touches will always be there, just like they've always been there. That's something that never changes.
Taemin watches Minho from a monitor instead of the other side of the room and realizes the fondness he feels won't change either.
There had never been a start to it -- there had been the first meeting and the first kiss, but never a definite start that he could pinpoint in his memory and replay, replay, replay on the nights he felt alone. And there would probably never be an end to all of this, where he could pinpoint the exact moment he realized that it was over but the bond between him and Minho would never be.
It's a horrible consolation prize -- a friendship kept but a relationship lost -- but it's useless trying to save what has already faded away.
