i wrote something... but went waaaay over time and started late (:45 mark). imma post it anyway because i'll never post this in public~
Kim Kibum is an unremarkable human being. He has a common name, he has lead a suffocatingly tame life, and he is lucky enough to be able to travel and find a certain something that's missing in his life.
He spends some time wandering through lonely and bustling Tokyo, and wanders to the other side of the Pacific via fishing boats that expertly navigate treacherous seas. In Canada, he befriends a jaded, older woman, who teaches him enough English for them to burrow deep into their own respetive pysche and pick each other apart, one by one. The part in a city that speaks a language he recognizes as strikingly similar to French, and his own skills barely carry him through his first week while solo. Kibum finally meets a young man with enough money to burn the world,...... which is how he ends up with a plane ticket to London.
When he meets the boy, almost a man in his own right, it had been a long time since he had an actual conversation with someone that had a common cultural background with him. He had been on the island for five months, and it had been almost two years since he left his parents behind. The only home he knew and was still able to leave.
He didn't usually talk to Koreans, but it was more like they saw his body language, the way he dressed that immediately drew attention to its bold colors, and various accessories, and chose to not talk to him. And this was the first time he met a Korean from Korea at one of beau's parties.
That boy danced on a table with a girl, both seeming to embody the friskiest, unresolved sexual tension he's ever seen, and were definitely on something. She fainted first, the dainty creature caught by her friends. But the boy kept going until the Michael Jackson track stopped, and he fell to his knees. Kibum had watched for the last several minutes, a trainwreck that was too beyond his ability to influence, and he was able to catch the boy as he slumped to the side, nearly tumbling off the dinner table.
When the boy finally came to his senses the next morning, after a night of retching and being forced fed water, "where the hell are your friends kid, and what kinds of friends are they, someone as skinny as you should not take E," Kibum had to know. "You're Korean," he said, blunt. "You were apologizing in Korean."
"Thank you," the boy responds in English. And then in Korean, "I'm Taemin," flashing a smile that immediately triggered recognition: this was that kid that was in all those cute commercials, in several dramas where he'd cry with silent tears dripping from ridiculously large eyes.
----some other things happen here orz--they leave london, they travel along the south FR coast, they run into one of taemin's old friends that tries to convince them to separate from their wanderlust, taemin buys them tickets to new zeland (or jamaica, or some place) and they travel around with a nomadic goat herder, more stuff----
along the way, there's this sentence:
Kibum realizes as he falls into the boy, this idea: he's trying to save something that can't be recouped, that perhaps hasn't been there for years, that Taemin barely feels the idea of contentment. For him, a mere abstraction. Kibum sees the inevitable clearly and lets himself get swept away.
