Valentine's Day doesn't mean much to a ten year old boy: the pink and the red, the frills, baking and making your own pretty little cards. While all of the girls in Junho's class start whispering amongst each other as soon as February hits, the boys carry on as if nothing's changed. When they have trading cards, football and cartoons to amuse them, what should a little holiday like Valentine's Day matter?
Eventually, though, the little naked kid with the bow catches up to all of them. The teacher starts talking about making cards, about exchanging them, and she doesn't realize what her words mean. What they do to a group of ten year old little boys.
"Everyone will make their own little mail boxes and we all can exchange cards. Won't that be fun?" The teacher smiles; and the pressure is on.
Taecyeon pulls Junho to the side after school and asks him if he's heard who Yoona will be giving cards to. Junho shrugs and tells him to bug off. As if a popular girl like Yoona would ever tell him something like that. Then he finds Nichkhun chattering nervously to Seulong about Victoria. Even Doojoon is caught up in the frenzy, making bets with all the other boys about who will give them cards.
"I bet Min will give me one."
"No way! But Sohee's so going to give me one."
"Dream on."
All the voices of his friends blend together as The Day arrives. On February 13th, Junho sits in class and pastes red hearts onto a paper bag and he doesn't understand why. The boy next to him, a rather girly but kind boy named Kevin, enthusiastically trims his in paper lace and writes 'I love you' in English along the sides. The teacher scolds Junho for not being more creative himself, so he tosses some glitter onto it and she beams. Then he gets teased by his older brother when he gets home for being covered in pink glitter.
Something happens the next morning as he stands at his desk, watching his classmates shuffle about with their stacks of little cards clutched tightly in their hands. The girls are bunched together and blushing already; the boys are scattered about and trying very hard to look oblivious. Doojoon even pretends to have forgotten his paper bag mailbox. Chansung says the same, but Junho thinks he might actually have forgotten it.
Junho looks around and starts to feel it-- the sweaty palms, the beating hard, the sudden burst of anxiety. What if he doesn't get any cards? Would the other boys make fun of him? Why is Sunye smiling at him like that? He gulps. The teacher calls all of them to order.
He sits with his head resting on his hands as kids file past his desk. Sunye gave him a card. So did Min. A few of his friends even dropped a card into his bag, theirs less pink and red and more Spongebob and Transformers, of course. Junho feels his anxiety lessen, though he feels a bit guilty for not bringing any cards of his own. He'd tried to get his brother to take him to buy some, but only faced more ridicule. Next time he'd try at a time when he wasn't covered in glitter.
It's almost lunch time when they pack up their mailboxes. Just as he's shoving the bag into his desk, a pair of arms grab him from behind and lift him out of his chair. "Quit it, Soohyun!" he snaps and flails at his friend.
"What?" Soohyun asks innocently, squeezing Junho harder until he almost can't breathe. "I just wanted to give you your valentine."
Junho just stares at him and reluctantly fishes out his bag. He wonders what kind of cards a kid like Soohyun would get. Something loud. Something flashy. Something obnoxious. But when he opens his bag, Soohyun shoves a prettily wrapped package, with a nice little box on top and everything.
"My sister helped me," he says sheepishly and shoves it into Junho's hands. "For my best friend."
Junho opens it to find three horribly lopsided heart-shaped cookies.
