"Minho should be in room 501," Jinki tells them after they've gotten their visitor's passes, "although I'm not sure where Taemin is. He likes to wander around."
"Great, so we're playing hide and go seek too?" Jonghyun groans softly so that only Kibum can hear him. It's not like he doesn't agree with the older boy though.
Jinki holds up his hands, as if to ward off the negativity. "It's not that bad, once you get used to it," he says, "I mean, sure, it smells funny in here and the white is a little blinding, and once in a while, you see loads of blood -- but I mean it! Hospitals are nice, nice places." He grins at them, as if to emphasize his point, but it's kinda put off by the fact that they hear vomiting noises from the room to his left.
Kibum buries his head in Jonghyun's shoulder and moans.
Nonetheless, they follow Jinki to the fifth floor where there are a bunch of kids rolling around in wheelchairs for whatever reason. Most of them aren't even dressed in surgical gowns though, which is odd to Kibum. His own mother works in a hospital too, but every time he had gone, most of the patients were obediently wearing those tacky things and getting sponge baths and the like. Not having wheelchair races.
"Minho! Minho!" Jinki suddenly shouts, and they watch as he runs over to a lanky boy with badly cropped hair. His face is nice, even though it's twisted in poorly disguised pain. Kibum would have guessed it was from jamming his leg into something, only there's nothing there.
"What are you doing? Were you racing again?" Jinki scolds, as all of the other kids stop to stare at him like the outsider he was, "And where's Taemin? He was supposed to stick with you!"
Minho tries to smile, but it comes off a bit crooked and eventually he gives up. "Hyung, I just.. I didn't mean to, you know?" He turns his big, brown eyes at Jinki and even Kibum starts to feel a little bit charmed by him, but the older boy would have none of it.
"No! No, no, no!" Jinki stammered, flailing his arms around until he made an X in between the two of them. "No lying! I won't be fooled by that face! Taemin! Where is he?"
Minho's sad expression fades off his face, and instead, he leans forward mischievously. "He's with a girl. Gong Minji from room 521." He wiggles an eyebrow and watches in amusement as horror spread across Jinki's face before the boy suddenly bolts off down the hall.
"You were lying," Kibum calls out, walking over to Minho's wheelchair as the children in the corridor resumed their races and conversations. Jonghyun follows behind him, eying the boy with suspicion. "It was so obvious."
Minho smiles, and leans back into his chair. "Nice to meet you too," he says conversationally, "do you always accuse people of lying?"
"Yeah, totally," Jonghyun answers for his best friend. "He wouldn't be Kim Kibum if he didn't see the worst in people."
Minho nods in acknowledgement and opens his mouth to say something -- however, he's stopped by the high pitched shriek of a girl from down the hall in the same direction Jinki had just taken.
"I better go save Jinki hyung," he chuckles. He looks at them and smiles brightly, gesturing towards one of the rooms nearby. "If you wanna talk to Taemin, he's in there. I'll bring Jinki hyung in a couple of minutes."
He starts to wheel away at an impressive speed, and Kibum can feel childish curiosity radiating off of Jonghyun in waves.
"Just go," he insists, shoving his best friend forward.
Jonghyun looks like he's about to say something, but just like Minho he ends up saying nothing. Instead, he sprints down the hall until he catches up with Minho and even from a distance, Kibum can tell they're striking up a conversation already.

As for himself, he eyes the room that Minho had pointed out earlier. Room 501, where Minho was supposed to be. The door is wide open, and despite the fluorescent lighting, Kibum can tell that there's light streaming in from the windows as well.
When he walks in, he's greeted with the sight of a boy in yet another wheelchair reaching clumsily for a pair of shiny high top sneakers about a meter away. It's both cute and pathetic, and somehow Kibum finds himself reaching over and picking up the sneakers for him.
"Lee Taemin?" he asks as he hands the shoes over. The boy looks up at him with long lashes and and a curious expression and Kibum's glad that the kid's taken the sneakers from his hands or else he would have dropped them or done something stupid.
"Yeah," Taemin said, acknowledging his name, "that's me. You must be one of Hyung's friends, right?"
Kibum wants to correct him, and he knows that if this had been any other kid, he would have scoffed in his face. But for some reason, he can't do that to Taemin. More than anything, Kibum feels this almost unresistable urge to scoop the boy up out of his wheelchair and coo at him. Maybe even feed him pepero or something sweet.
Luckily, for the sake of his pride, he holds himself back. But just barely.
"I guess you could call us that," he answers lamely, and what the hell -- Kibum and lame usually don't go together. That's a position belonging to idiots like Jonghyun and Jinki. There's something weird about this kid that weirds Kibum out. It's this kid's fault, not his.
Taemin smiles, and looks at the door to the hallway. "I guess he'll be coming soon," he sighs, and he starts to put on his sneakers slowly. It's impossible for Kibum not to notice that not only is he having trouble doing so.
It makes him feel a little sick and he immediately kneels down to help.
"So what happened?" he can't help asking. He's never been one for tact, but seeing as he's now helping the stick-thin boy put on his sneakers, he figures that he might as well settle his curiosity now.
The wheelchair bound boy doesn't say anything, just staring at Kibum with a pensive expression. It unnerves him, to be honest, and he doesn't look away from Taemin's sneakers out of fear of meeting his eyes.
"I've always been like this," Taemin says vaguely. He doesn't take his eyes off of Kibum, and they don't say anything until Jonghyun and Jinki come back, wheeling Minho into the room.
"I can't believe I fell for another one of your lies," Jinki complains, "you and Taemin are two of a kind."
"It's your own fault, Hyung."
The sound of Jinki whining and demanding respect is drowned out by Jonghyun and Minho's laughter, and Kibum is suddenly relieved about the interruption. Even Taemin cracks a smile, and waves happily as if Kibum hadn't just asked him why he was paralyzed just moments before.
"Hey, Hyung! Your friends seem nice," Taemin laughs, sparing a passing glance for both Kibum and Jonghyun. "Will they be visiting often?"
"Of course we will," Kibum immediately says, and right afterward, he wishes he hadn't because now everyone is looking at him funny. Nonetheless, he keeps on going, "I mean, we'll come and bring food and fluff your pillows or whatever you want. That's it."
Taemin looks pretty amused at Kibum's declaration, and turns to his cousin. "I want this one," he says quite pointedly, "Minho can get you and that other guy, but I want this one."
Jinki looks confused and as if he wants to say something, but Jonghyun cuts him off.
"We're not pets! And why would you want Key? I'm obviously a much better pick," he insists, gesturing wildly to himself. He looks absolutely offended that Kibum had been chosen over him, despite the fact that he hadn't even seen Taemin until that moment.
"Because I'm not an idiot like you," Kibum sniffs, and he stands up from his place on the floor. "I'll know exactly what to do to take care of Taeminie. Besides, you're a bad influence. You incinerated Jinki's bike, after all. I'll be the one taking care of him."
And as he moves to stand behind Taemin's wheelchair, he misses the devilish smirk that crosses the boy's face for a fraction of a second, even if the other three notice it.

("Taemin," Jinki says seriously once both Jonghyun and Kibum have left, "what are you doing in a wheelchair?"
Both Taemin and Minho stare at him like he's an idiot, and he does kind of feel like one for asking, but nonetheless he stands firm.
"Obviously, I'm sitting in it, Hyung."
His tone is respectful for the most part, but even Jinki can't ignore the slight hint of sarcasm in his words. Minho snickers playfully and wheels over to Taemin's side of the room.
"So I guess this means I'll be seeing you every day until my leg heals?" Minho asks hopefully, and it's kinda pathetic how attention starved he can be, but Taemin doesn't mind. They are best friends after all.
"Yeah, definitely. I wouldn't wanna break Kibum hyung's heart after all. He seems dead set on pampering me, unlike another hyung I know," Taemin laughs, as he stares pointedly at Jinki.
"That's because there's nothing wrong with you!" Jinki moans like his spirit's been broken, "You're not handicapped, so why did you tell Kibum you were?"
Taemin gets up from the wheelchair, walking over to Jinki just fine. He ends up draping himself over his cousin, a bright smile on his face.
"I didn't say anything about being handicapped. I just happened to be sitting in the chair when he came in," he says innocently, and Jinki knows for sure he and Minho are a pair of little liars, even if Kibum and Jonghyun don't.)
i can't believe i ended up writing 2k+ for this. XD i'm proud i wrote this much, but i don't think i got the characterization down too well. i'll just have to work on it. and the romance. x_x
