“What are you doing?” Yoochun asked with confusion upon walking in the front door of their Japanese dorm.
Jaejoong didn’t look up from the few papers in his hands, “Sorting fan mail,” he murmured and then tossed a sheet of paper into what looked like one of three piles. Across the floor various sheets of paper were scattered in loose groupings that seemed to be forming some sort of organizational system.
They looked like the typical fan letters that their group usually received: various forms of writing, typically in Japanese, Korean, or English, on typically plain white paper or red paper of some shade. As often as they could the members of one of the most popular groups in all of Asia took time to read through the words of their fans, but Yoochun had never seen it done in this process, at one am in the morning.
“Why are you sorting it?” he asked, kneeling and picking up the letter closest to him.
Jaejoong gave him a look that told him that he should clearly understand why without asking and Yoochun shrugged. After this long working and living together he was well used to the quirks of the other man. With a sigh Jaejoong elaborated, “Those in front of you are mail of encouragement from our fans. This pile,” he gestured to the ocean of mail in front of him, “is from our fans that are confused about our recent decision.”
“And that pile?” Yoochun asked gesturing to the only neat stacks of mail in the room besides the still bound ones behind the man.
Jaejoong tore open a letter and scanned it before folding it again and tossing it with its envelope into the pile closest to Yoochun. “That pile,” he said grabbing another piece, “Is from the fans that hate us and either wish to no longer be fans, or wish that we would just quit the group instead of doing this to Yunho and Changmin.”
“Oh,” Yoochun said quietly. Jaejoong didn’t say anything in reply, choosing instead to carefully read the letter in his hands. When he was finished with it he folded it neatly and placed it back in its envelope before placing it on the very neatly stacked pile.
“How many?” Yoochun asked, knowing he wouldn’t have to elaborate.
“143 so far,” Jaejoong answer, reaching for another.
“You read every one?”
“Yes, I owe them that at least,” Jaejoong told him softly.
Yoochun sat for a moment and then nodded. “Move over,” he told Jaejoong. There was a bit of shuffling as they made room for another body between the letters and the man sitting amongst them. In short order, Yoochun was able to join him and they sat together looking through the letters one at a time with their knees just barely touching for moral support.
Junsu joined them thirty minutes later and between the three of them it took two hours to finish the pile of letters that they had been given. When they were done they stretched back onto their backs on the floor staring at the ceiling. Out of all the letters they had looked at, 368 had joined the neatly stacked letters from their once fans.
“Do you think we are doing the right thing with this lawsuit stuff?” Junsu asked quietly.
“Yes, it had to be done. Someone sooner or later had to do something about the way our contracts are,” Jaejoong answered immediately.
“Yeah,” Yoochun agreed slowly, as if he wasn’t agreeing at all.
Jaejoong sighed and his phone vibrated in his pocket. He fished it out and flipped it open to read the screen. ‘If you are awake and reading this, go to bed you idiot. Sleep well.’ He smiled and read the print at the top of the screen indicating who the text was from. It read ‘Our Fearless Leader’
He quickly typed out a reply of, ‘Shut up Yunho. I don’t have to listen to you when there is an ocean separating us,’ and clicked send.
It took a moment before his phone vibrated to indicate the return response. ‘Yes you do. I am still your leader! XP’
“Yunho?” Yoochun asked with a smile leaning over and reading the screen.
‘No you aren’t we have filed a lawsuit remember! We are traitors!’ Jaejoong texted back quickly.
Junsu smiled and scooted closer so that all three were looking at the screen when the reply came. ‘Doesn’t matter. We will always be TVXQ. And that makes me still in charge. Get some sleep.’ Jaejoong was going to text a reply when his phone vibrated with another message ‘Night Jae. Night Yoochun. Night Junsu. Always keep the faith.’
‘Night Yunho, tell Min goodnight for us too. Miss you both.’ Jaejoong texted back quickly.
“He must have seen the fan messages too,” Yoochun mused quietly.
“At least not all of them hate us. I sort of like their motto of ‘Always Keep the Faith’,” Junsu replied.
“Me too,” Jaejoong agreed. “At least some of them think we will get through this.”
“No matter what happens we will always be the same people,” Yoochun said quietly.
“Yeah,” Jaejoong said quietly as if he was pondering something. Junsu and Yoochun exchanged looks from either side of him. They knew that when that particular look crossed Jaejoong’s face something creative was bound to follow. “I have an idea,” he declared and lifted his phone. He began to dial it and then pressed it to his ear. When it was picked up he spoke into it as if talking to a very dear friend and Yoochun knew then and there this was going to be one long night.

A day later, Yoochun and Jaejoong exchanged smiles as they dug through their suitcases and came upon the perfect shirts to wear for their trip home. When Junsu saw them in their chosen clothing for the day, he simply sighed and rolled his eyes. It wouldn’t matter if he had told them that this was one of the worst ideas they had ever had, neither of them would have listened, but the truth was that he didn’t think it was that bad of an idea after all.
They walked into the airport, still full of fans even with everything that had happened, with sunglasses on and lugging their suitcases behind them. When the fans saw them they began to scream but the scream was a bit different than normal. Junsu knew without a doubt that the thing that had caused it was the product of a crazy, late night, Jaejoong sponsored, adventure. Cameras flashed the entire way as they wove through the airport and boarded the plane.
Once they were safe inside, it was a relatively quiet flight, but as they exited their terminal into Korea, screaming fans were waiting for them. Junsu was walking with his headphones in trying to tune it out when his phone vibrated. He flipped it open and saw a text from Yunho that had been sent to all three of them ‘I saw what you guys did… Welcome home. Always Keep the Faith.’ Junsu smiled and closed his phone again and continued pressing through the crowd.
One they were all safe in their van he pulled off his glasses and looked at the other two members of his group who were sitting in their vehicle and smiling just the smallest bit to themselves. There on their chests were the words that had sent the fans into an extra excited tizzy all day long.
Junsu sat back and smiled to himself. Even if it wasn’t written on his skin, the words were still written on his heart. On the chests of his band mates and brothers, written in elegant English that stretched over their hearts, was a promise and a hope to both themselves and their fans. Words that they would never forget: ‘Always Keep the Faith’.
