they were like parallel lines. yuna realized it more than ever at graduation, when they were both surrounded flashing lights and a couple of cameras.

“are you two friends?” the reporter asked, holding out the microphone.

seokmin grinned and leaned forward to talk into the microphone. “of course we are,” he said, and he stepped a little closer to her, trying to show what the reporter wants to see.

seokmin was friends with everyone.

they laughed and joked for a while, seokmin keeping the conversation going, but even the television crews sensed the awkwardness between them and left. as soon as the cameras were off, yuna’s smile slipped, seokmin backed away, his hands rubbing the back of his neck.

“it was nice talking to you,” he said quietly.

yuna tried to swallow the lump in her throat. “yeah,” she managed to get out before turning around to walk away.

“yuna?” seokmin asked. she stopped in her tracks but didn’t turn around, eyes closed. yuna listened to the sound of his breathing for a couple of seconds.

“nevermind,” he said, finally. she continues to walk away.

perhaps she could call them tangential. doomed after one meeting. perhaps.

she liked seokmin from way before, when girls didn’t flock to him in the hallways and guys didn’t clamber to be his friend. they were all the same, all trainees or close to it, all wanting a small slice of fame.

it was the shy kind, yuna’s crush. she’d stare at him behind corners, admire his voice as other complimented him, never speaking. it was easy to be part of the background in a school where everyone was vying for attention, easy to like seokmin in silence.

she fell in love with his voice first. it greeted her, soaring and warm, on her first day of school. as welcoming as her mother’s hugs, as warm as any home made meal could make her. seokmin’s voice reminded her of her childhood, of her home, of comfort.

it was the most beautiful thing she had ever heard.

he was always smiling, was the thing. radiant and beautiful, pretty in a way no one else was. yuna kept the memory of each smile to herself, guarded it as something precious. it was a smile that could stop wars, a book she read once said. seokmin’s smile didn’t need to stop wars. it already stopped yuna’s heart, kept it there in place.

they were like parallel lines, she realized, and that didn't hurt as much as the fact that perhaps, perhaps--

perhaps if she tried to meet him earlier they would be walking along the same path.
