SNSD, Yoona/Taeyeon
Kim Taeyeon prided herself on being a very patient girl. After all, as a leader of nine girls, she had to be. She was calm and collected whenever Sunny and Hyoyeon fought about who stole whose clothes. She was patient whenever Jessica decided to try and make a meal from the rest of the girls. It was more like a mess, if you asked her. She was also extremely lenient when Seohyun got up at early hours in the morning, just to laugh at an episode of Keroro showing on the television. She wouldn’t mention to the magnae that her loud laughs woke her up; she was just roll over and go back to sleep.
She considered herself the most patient whenever a boy would bring up their ideal on a show, especially when it was their own deer, Yoona. Taeyeon understood why everyone seemed to love Yoona. She was sweet, and always so down-to-earth that she didn’t even seem like a star at all. She was funny, and her dorky side is what drew people in. Not to mention, she was completely gorgeous.
Taeyeon didn’t consider herself to be jealous. Instead, she was just in love.
She didn’t remember exactly when it started, but it had been around their “Kissing You” era. When Yoona and Donghae would talk and laugh together on set, she would talk to Sunny and pretend not to notice their flirting. She couldn’t figure out why her heart beat faster, and decided that if she ignored it, it would go away.
It worked for a while. Taeyeon could keep her composure under any circumstances. That’s why she was assigned to be the leader. She couldn’t imagine just being a regular member, no matter how horrible that sounded. She also couldn’t imagine anyone else being able to do what she could. Her job was tough, but she was able to work under the circumstances.
Her act started to fall apart around the beginning of the “Genie” era. That was when all the boys decided to announce that Yoona was their ideal girl. Taeyeon could understand because Yoona was almost perfect. That’s when she realized she couldn’t fight her feelings off. It was scary because it was brand new, but she would tackle this problem professionally, just like all her other problems.
Yoona and Taeyeon barely got time alone together. They barely got time alone by themselves. That’s why she was able to keep such a secret from everyone. They all had their own busy schedules, and didn’t have time for love in their lives.
That’s why Taeyeon was surprised when Yoona announced to all the members that she had a date. She seemed to be glowing when she said that Leeteuk asked her out, and she agreed to it. Everyone congratulated her like she had just won some award, even Taeyeon. She pushed down the jealous streak that she felt in favor of her leader worries.
“What happens if you get caught? This is really dangerous, Yoona… Be careful, okay? I’d rather you not go out, but… you seem happy so I’ll let it go just this once!” She laughed.
They were alone together, sitting in Yoona’s room as Yoona got ready for her date. She looked extremely beautiful, and Taeyeon couldn’t stop looking at her. It was like she stepped out of some kind of dream. She was wearing a simple white dress, and to anyone else that would have been ordinary. But to Taeyeon, it was like she was an angel.
“I promise I’ll be safe. We’re going somewhere secluded, so nobody will see us. He made sure! He was working on this for a while, actually… it was really sweet.”
Yoona was blushing darkly, making Taeyeon’s insides churn. Could she make her blush like that? Could she get to see that smile only for her?
“Well… have fun, okay? Don’t do anything stupid!”
---
Taeyeon couldn’t sleep that night. She kept tossing and turning, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t sleep. Around two in the morning, she heard the door click, and there was a happy sigh that cut through the silence. Yoona was home.
She couldn’t sleep anyway, so Taeyeon awoke, dragging herself into the living room. Yoona was there, carefully taking off her shoes so she didn’t wake anyone. She looked up at Taeyeon afterwards, her eyes widening in surprise.
“Unni! Ah.. did I wake you? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to… it’s late, you should sleep.”
The always thoughtful Yoona. She sometimes acted like she was older, like she should be taking care of the leader. Taeyeon shook her head, a small smile on her face. “I can’t sleep.”
They ended up on the couch, Yoona ranting her heart out about how Leeteuk was perfect to her. He held open the doors for her, he pushed her seat in, he paid for her meal. He was a perfect gentleman.
Taeyeon tried to keep a large smile, but with every sentence, it slipped a little bit. She tried to stay positive, but it wasn’t as easy as it should have been. She wanted to be happy for Yoona, really, because Leeteuk was a good friend of hers and she knew he would treat her right. But she still wanted that chance for herself.
“You should like you had fun.” Taeyeon gave a weakened smile and Yoona nodded, looking down at her fingers.
“But…” Yoona started, letting out a sigh. “I like him, but it didn’t feel right. I had a lot of fun, but I think he is just a close friend of mine.”
Taeyeon felt bad for it, but her smile grew, reaching over to place a hand on Yoona’s.
“It’s alright if you don’t feel the same way. That happens a lot of times. Maybe you can try again with someone else.”
Yoona was quiet, deciding that silence was the best answer. Taeyeon fidgeted. She felt awkward now, and there was a bubble in her throat that was trying to force its way out. It stayed there even if she tried to swallow it down. Yoona started to talk, but Taeyeon didn’t hear her. She moved to get up, and Taeyeon’s hand, which was still on Yoona’s, moved to tug her back down.
“What if we go on a date?”
She didn’t mean to say it, but she did. She bit down on her lower lip and looked off to the side somewhere in embarrassment. Yoona was just looking at her, she could feel it, and every second felt like an hour.
“The two of us… like girls?” Yoona’s voice was soft, hesitant even, and Taeyeon nodded slowly.
“Yes, two girls… I would like that. I mean, you don’t have to, it’s just an offer.”
Taeyeon slowly stands up, her hand still attached to Yoona. The younger is looking at her with a slight look of shock and shakes her head quickly, fumbling over her words.
“No… no, I mean, you’re another girl and I-"
Taeyeon doesn’t know what got into her. But, as Yoona was talking, she just wanted her to be quiet, so she leaned forward and pressed their lips together.
It wasn’t anything magical, but it was real and it was how she knew how to get all her feelings across. When she pulled back not a while later, Yoona’s face was a cherry blush, her mouth shaped into an “o”. Taeyeon doesn’t make an apology, because needed to do that. She needed it out of her system.
“I’m.. I’m going to bed, goodnight.” Yoona rushed out of the room, a hand covering her mouth. Taeyeon looked after her, never feeling more like an idiot than in that moment.
---
Yoona didn’t talk to Taeyeon for a while. She tried to avoid the leader more than ever before. Two weeks had flown by since the kiss, and there was no answer, not that Taeyeon expected one.
No one had noticed how awkward they were being, because they weren’t close, close friends before. Only Taeyeon and Yoona knew what was going on.
It was at the three week mark that Yoona finally approached Taeyeon. The elder couldn’t look at her, only kept cleaning the kitchen with vigor. She didn’t want to hear what Yoona had to say.
“Unni… I’ve been thinking a lot.”
Taeyeon didn’t say anything. She just nodded, still wiping the counters down.
“I’m… I don’t have anything to do on Thursday. Do... do you want to go out?”
A smile broke out on Taeyeon’s face, and she finally looked over at Yoona, nodding a little bit.
“Okay.”
