I am convinced that by the time I leave Louisiana (whenever that may be), I will have experienced just about every natural disaster or environmental disaster there is. So far I've lived through hurricanes, oil spill, snow (ok, I know that doesn't count for much), freezing rain, near tornadoes, and now flooding. They are saying that the Mississippi River flooding could be as bad as the flood of 1927 when they had to blow up the levees in St. Bernard parish. Where I live in BR has no real flood threat. However, they were putting sandbags on the street that my office is on because the levees downtown are not as high as the levees elsewhere. The Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled to open up the 2 spillways that protect Baton Rouge and New Orleans, respectively. The Morganza Spillway will reduce the River's flow into Baton Rouge by diverting nearly 1/2 of the flow into the Atchafalaya Basin and then into the Gulf. The Bonnet Carre Spillway, near New Orleans, will divert water into Lake Pontchartrain. The Bonnet Carre Spillway was opened in Spring 2008. Laura V. and I went to go watch them open it.
