1000+ cranes, made and given

Several months ago (maybe over a year), a coworker went on extended medical leave. I hadn't heard any news from her until just before Christmas, so I was surprised to hear from her. She said she was making a point to call all her friends in honor of Christmas and just to let us all know she was thinking of us. I was incredibly touched by her thoughtfulness. I consider her more than an acquaintance, yet not a really close friend, so it was particularly nice.

Fast forward to maybe two months ago. I read about a fellow geek folding 1000 cranes as a get-well present for a colleague. It sounded like a great idea, so I talked to a couple folks at work and ordered about 1200 sheets of origami paper.

So we started folding. And recruiting others to help us fold, though I suspect the three of us folded the bulk of it. We then strung them up with fishing line to a large disk of cardboard, creating a mobile of colorful cranes.

The final product was even prettier than I thought it would be. We had originally planned to decorate her cubicle with it, as a surprise when she came back to work.

Alas, she's been transferred to another building maybe 20 miles away, so we bundled it all up and asked her close friend (also a coworker) to bring them for us.

But the best part? Was having my formerly sick friend visit us all at work and giving a hug. :) She's looking in excellent health and was (apparently) in tears when she received our gift, which makes me very happy.

If anyone else is interested in doing this project, I can recommend an online store for purchasing the origami paper. The 1200 sheets I bought were in various sizes and colors. The paper was quite easy to fold and takes creases well.
