So in case some of you are not in the know, I've decided to have my eye surgeries this summer. Yes, surger(ies). I turn 23 in July, and I won't be covered by dad's insurance (and don't have any of my own), so it's time. I'm going to have both cataracts finally removed, starting with my left eye (the one I had retinal surgery on back in 2003) in a couple of weeks, we're still waiting for authorization.
Just a little info on the process. With cataract surgery they remove your cloudy lens, and replace it with a new lens implant. The new implant actually has power (just like glasses), so in theory I should be close to 20/20 vision. In the past they would just replace your lens with a grade-less lens, and you'd have to wear really thick glasses post-op, not the case now though, so it's like killing two birds with one stone.
The only drawbacks with lens implants, is that you lose your nearsightedness. Your eye obviously has the abilities to focus--like a camera, but in replacing your original lenses, you lose that ability. The doc was actually telling me that there is a new type of lens that allows for focusing near and far, but it isn't the right lens for my particular case. I'll probably have really good distance vision, but I'll need reading glasses. I thought about it for a while, and it's not like it'll make a difference because my reading vision is pretty horrible anyway.
Following that recovery, which is actually a simple outpatient procedure, I'll be on my feet the next day--although it takes about a month for it to be fully healed, I'll have the other eye fixed as well.
Please don't worry about me, cataract surgery is one of the most routine eye surgeries performed, and my doctor has 30+ years of experience and high levels of success with the procedure. Modern advances make the surgery quicker than ever, but obviously there are ALWAYS risks associated for any surgery, I'll just pray everything will go smoothly. I've been gun shy for 5 years, since my retinal surgery, I just hate the experience of going under the knife, but I think I'm ready again, it's actually surprising that I've waited this long.
Take care of your eyes kids! :)
