Well, here I am with an armchair opinion that means nothing in the greater scope of the world, but think what Lori Drew did was despicable and knowingly cruel. And to do that to a child of 13, if it is not illegal, should be. She should have known better as the adult in this situation and I fully think she deserves punishment.

But I know that is an emotional view, not a legal one. And I have no idea why a Los Angeles grand jury is hearing anything.

My understanding it's because the Federal prosecutor in this case is pursuing federal wire and/or "cyber" fraud charges so the grand jury was convened in the city where MySpace is headquartered. As the fraud was perpetrated through MySpace and occurred on its services, the charges are being filed there rather than in Illinois where the actual parties involved live. Technically its a federal grand jury so they could have held it anywhere there is a Federal Court, but my hunch is the real reason for LA is easy access to gobs and gobs of free media coverage.

With the current scandals around federal prosecutors under the Bush Administration being nothing more than hired guns for the GOP, there is probably no small amount of grandstanding in this case to make it look like they'll actually do something other than block Democrats from taking office.

Henh ... I'm saying we should punish her even if it will do no real good from a rehabilitation or deterrence argument. I want her to pay for what she did to that poor girl. I might think differently if all she had done was set up the account and make the mistake of allowing her teenage daughter access to it. She crossed a real line for me when she actively participated in the bullying and used it as a source of humor for her family and friends despite knowing ahead of time the target of these actions had a prior history of depression. She only made it worse for herself in my opinion by her actions after the fact.

Where she could be bullied and harassed by people who think its a joke and she should just grow up and tough it out.
